Independence Cemetery
aka Madge Cemetery
Madge, Harmon County, Oklahoma

© by: Dorothy M. Ward Winters & Area Coordinators

Dorothy M Ward Winters surveyed this cemetery in 2002.
Formerly called Madge Cemetery. Located SE 1/4 Section 16 Township 5 North Range 26 West of Indian Meridian. From Hollis, Oklahoma: 15 miles north on Highway 30, 2 miles west on Highway 9, 1 mile north. From Vinson, Oklahoma: 5 miles west, 1 mile north. This registry copied June 28 1979 by Mrs. B. B. Martin (Frances Jean Gear Martin), Mrs. Lucille "Pigg" Campbell Wilson and Mrs. Mary Ewing, Hollis, Oklahoma. Information listed here obtained in 1985. Harmon County, Oklahoma was formed in 1910 per Leon Nance. It was formed by taking parts of Jackson County which was taken from old Greer County. Pigg Wilson was given her nickname by her family when she was just a toddler. Addition and corrections welcome.

If you have family buried in the Independence/Madge Cemetery or have obits (with newspapers permission or an obit that you can write) or tombstone photos or individual portraits or can write a short bio or a gate photo and would like to add your information to this website, contact the area coordinator for more information. You can also check out our How to Submit page.

Note: Every effort has been made to transcribe this information accurately. These records MAY CONTAIN ERRORS. Any corrections and/or additions greatly appreciated. [John Wesley Adkins m. 1892 to Christian Wise Adkins. Their daughter Cora was the wife of Henry Wilson Keesee.]

[Elbert Ruben Keesee was the son of Jobe and Ann Watts Keesee. He died Dec. 16, 1881.]

[Richard Keesee was the son of Payton Jr. and Hila Duggins Keesee. George Keesee is his brother.]

[Henry W. Keesee was the son of Jobe and Louisa Randall Hunt Keesee.]

[Myra Keesee never married. She was partially blind caused by a childhood illness.]

[Ellen E. Hart was the daughter of Halver and Agnes Hart. Halver was the son of Sterling and Elizabeth Hunt Hart. [Elizabeth (Lizzie) was the daughter of Jim and Louisa Randall Hunt and the mother of Halver.]

[Anna F. Stallings was the second wife of William M. Keesee, Jr.]

[William M. Keesee, Jr. was the son of William and Elvira (Dovey) Copelin Keesee Yocham.]

[Information has been received that Elvira (Dovey) Copelin Keesee Yocham is buried at Independence although her name isn't on this list.]

[Dewitt Talmage Keesee was the son of Richard.]

[Concerning the HYATT family: Bonnie Hyatt of Palacios, Texas has furnished the information about Floise (Floyce) Hyatt and Roy Earnest Hyatt. Bonnie is the daughter of Madeline (Weaver) Hyatt (15 July 1922 - 14 April 1997 Madeline is buried in Canadian, Hemphill County, Texas.]

[E-mail from Eddie Malley on Feb. 28, 2001 to Dorothy M. Winters states that he believes the C.M. Lamkin listed here is actually his great great grandfather whose name was George Marion Lamkin, born September 18, 1832, died in Independence, Oklahoma on July 14, 1905. After researching, information from Myrtle Long Lamkin agrees that the man is George Marion Lamkin but the date of death was July 6 1905. George Marion Lamkin was the grandfather of Harry Lamkin, husband of Myrtle.]

[Myrtle Long Lamkin also send information about George Marion Lamkin being the first person to be buried in the cemeter which was built on land donated by Mildred Lamkin Lindsey and John C. Lindsey. The donated land was part of the Lindsey property and was opened June 14, 1905.]

[More information from Myrtle: Ina Margaret Lamkin was the sister of Harry Lamkin (Myrtle's husband). Adam Lamkin, infant, was Harry's brother.]
