Obit for Mary posted by Jo Aguirre
Sep 25, 1914 - Jul 31, 2009

Mary Atzet, the second of five children, was born in Santa Barbara, California to Antonio and Maria Giminez on September 25, 1914. She died on July 31, 2009 at the Hensley Nursing Home in Sayre, Oklahoma of age-related afflictions. She lived to within two months of her 95th birthday.

Mary Gimenez married Raymond Joseph Atzet on June 25th, 1935 in Los Angeles, California. They were devoted parents through 62 years of marriage, a contract that saw them together until Ray's death on December 5, 1997. They were devoted parents to four sons and one daughter. They were grandparents to 14 children and 21 great-great grandchildren. Mary was a gifted musician on keyboard and reed instruments, spoke fluently and read at least two languages, and mastered photography and its many subtleties. She was a much-appreciated cook and baker back when kitchen duties included harvesting from a garden or from the wild and having to literally catch and pluck something edible. She designed and fabricated most of the clothing that her children wore. In her later years she enjoyed oil and watercolor painting, bowling and square dancing. Mary was fiercely independent and admired for strength of character. She supported various charities and was a very generous person with her time. Mary followed the teaching of the Catholic faith.

She will be buried at the Cheyenne Cemetery, next to her husband, on Monday, August 3, 2009 in a simple ceremony.

A celebration of her life is planned for the first week in October 2009.

She was preceded in death by both her parents, her husband and two brothers.

She is survived by four sons: Ray Anthony Atzet and wife Peggy of Crestline, California; Jon Edward Atzet and wife Emerette of Salt Lake City, Utah; Mary Burrows and husband Doyle of Cheyenne, Oklahoma; Donald Stephen Benedict Atzet of Cheyenne, Oklahoma and Thomas Atzet and wife Jackie of Merlin, Oregon; 2 sisters: Lydia Lunetta of California; Margaret Estep of California; 18 grandchildren, many great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Graveside Services were held at Cheyenne Cemetery at 2:00 p.m. Monday, August 3, 2009 under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service.
