Robert Lee "Bob" Jones, 96, died Saturday, July 24, 2021 in McAlester. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Bishop Funeral Service. A funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, July 31, 2021 at Bishop Chapel of Memories. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Tim Barrick, Daniel Barrick, Nathan Storts, Luke Storts, Andrew Storts, and Doug Storts. Honorary pallbearers will be Jerry Donathan, John Carano, Larry Jones, Dennis Trammell, and Brian Walkup. Bob was born October 22, 1924 in Ashland to Buster and Euna (Trammell) Jones. He attended Legal, Bohannon, and Ashland schools. He and Kathleen Walkup married in McAlester on January 6, 1943, and they enjoyed 69 years together before her death on June 24, 2012. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific campaigns in Saipan and Okinawa with the Army's 47th Engineer Construction Battalion. After the war, he farmed briefly in Coal County. In 1948, he started a 41 year federal civil service career at McAlester's Naval Ammunition Depot. From 1958 to 1960, he worked at Tinker Air Force Base and then returned to McAlester to continue work at NAD/AAP. He was a faithful member of the North McAlester Masonic Lodge #9 for over fifty years, and served as treasurer for several years. He was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinals fan, but more than anything he loved time with family - whether it was cooking burgers and making homemade ice cream with the grandkids or traveling with the love of his life, Kathleen. Bob was a strong, optimistic, encouraging, and generous man. His wisdom will be missed by all who knew him. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son-in-law: Muriel Borders; and siblings: Luceal, Bryan, Pauline McNutt, Dale, Gene, and Helen. Survivors include his daughter: Bobbie Borders of Allen, Texas; son: Gary Jones and wife, Lynn of Oklahoma City; daughter: Kathy Jones of Dallas, Texas; granddaughters: Michelle Barrick and husband, Tim, Melanie Storts and husband, Nathan, all of Allen, Texas; great-grandchildren: Melissa and Daniel Barrick, Luke, Emma, and Andrew Storts; and brother: Farris Jones of McAlester. The family extends thanks to the staff of Van Buren House and Walnut Grove for enriching the final years of Bob's life with their compassionate and quality care.
