Vernon David Gray, 84, of McAlester, died Tuesday, June 1, 2021 in Oklahoma City. The family will greet visitors and friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Friday, June 4, 2021 at Bishop Funeral Service. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 5, 2021 at Bishop Chapel of Memories officiated by Mr. James Bond. Burial will follow in Arpelar Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Henry Arroyo, Manuel Arroyo, Morris Tilford, Luke Pipes, Jared McClellan, Maverick Rowell. Honorary pallbearers will be the Men of the Crowder Church of Christ. Vernon David was born to Alma Lee and Lena E. (Smith) Gray on May 12, 1937 in Arpelar. He grew up in the Alderson, Haileyville, and Hartshorne areas. After graduating high school, Vernon served in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1959. He worked as a forklift mechanic for a glass plant in Los Angeles. He then owned and operated Gray's A-1 Upholstery in McAlester and retired in 1995. He married Susan Elaine Day in 1995 in Arkansas. Vernon started a New Life Behavior Ministries program branch in McAlester, and ministered and taught in prisons and jails for over 20 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and woodworking. Vernon was a member of Crowder Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by is parents: Alma and Lena Gray; son: David Gray; brothers: Marvin Gray, Harold Gray; and sisters: Gladys Scott, Lillian Kreimeier, and Louise Tackett. Vernon is survived by his wife: Susan of the home; daughters: Heidi Ables and husband, Steven of Broken Arrow, Melissa McClellan and husband, Jared of Bristow Point; daughter-in-law: Elizabeth Gray of Mississippi; grandchildren: Luke Pipes, Henry Arroyo, Larissa Haws and husband, Dan, Manuel Arroyo, Morris Tilford, Miranda Moore and husband, Shane; great-grandchildren: James Arroyo, Jasmine Arroyo, Daniel Eugene Haws, IV, Lola Haws, Aaron Moore, Noah Moore, and Abel Moore; brothers: Gerald Gray, Samuel Gray; a sister: Shirley; and numerous nieces, nephews, other family members, and friends.
