© Strode Funeral Home Stillwater, Oklahoma March 20, 2015 Dyton Bennett Matthews Surrounded by family and friends, Dyton Bennett Matthews went to be with The Lord on March 20, 2015, at the age of 94. Dyton was a resident of Montereau at Warren Woods, Tulsa, OK. A memorial service will be held at the Montereau Warren Chapel on Thursday, March 26, 2015, at 1:00 PM, immediately followed by a reception. A graveside service will be held in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Stillwater, OK at 4:00 PM that day. Strode Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. Dyton was born in Texanna, OK, on June 11, 1920, to John Henry and Sarah Matthews. He was married to Katherine Louise Ackley on September 19, 1942 in Dallas, TX. His parents and wife preceded him in death. In addition, he was the sole survivor of ten siblings. He is survived by three children: Dyton B. Matthews, Jr (Megan), Mary Kay Napolitano (Pat), and Dean Alan Matthews (Kelly); seven grand children, Marcus Matthews (Amy), Barrett Matthews, Lysa Napolitano (Steve Dunlop), Landon Matthews, Christen Greuel (James), Dexter Card (Ashley), Katie Fortna (Don); and six great grand children, Cheyanne Matthews, Kaileigh St Germaine, and Ellie Matthews, Brandon Card, Lane Card, and Avery Card. In addition, he is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families. He graduated from Conners Junior College as the Outstanding Aggie Graduate and continued his education at Oklahoma A&M University until the outbreak of World War II. During the war, he served in England as an Army Air Corps supply specialist in a B-17 bomb squadron. After the war, he completed his Bachelor's degree in Agriculture Education at Oklahoma A&M. In 1960, he received a Master of Science degree at Oklahoma State University. After he received his bachelor's degree, he worked as a Vocational Agriculture teacher in Madill, OK, where he established their first Future Farmers' of America program. After he received his Masters Degree, he switched to teaching science for three years, and then returned to Vocational Agriculture. Throughout his teaching career, his main emphasis was on his students and their achievements. In 1969, he continued his love for education by working in the Oklahoma State Department of Vocational Technical Education in Stillwater, OK. There he set up vocational training programs for the Oklahoma prison system. This provided an opportunity for prisoners to gain employment after their release. He retired from Vo Tech in 1986. He was a member of the Madill Roundup Club, Lions Club, the Future Farmers of America, and the C and O Travel Group. In Madill, he was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and a member of the First Methodist Church. In Stillwater, he attended the First Methodist and Country Side Baptist Churches. In retirement, he and his wife Katherine traveled extensively throughout the US and several overseas countries. He also pursued his love of livestock by breeding hogs and raising cattle. His pride and joy came when his Hampshire hog was selected as the Champion of the National Barrow Show in 1979. In 1999, he and his wife moved to Tulsa residing first at University Village and, in 2003, they were among the first residents of Montereau, where he enjoyed many friendships. His final job in life was to make those around him smile. Honorary Graveside Pall Bearers will be: James Greuel, Landon Matthews, Marcus Matthews, Barrett Matthews, Dexter Card, and Don Fortna. In lieu of flowers, you may send memorial contributions to the Montereau Benevolent Fund or the Wounded Warrior. |
