Louella Belle Everett passed away Monday, December 16, 2013 in Norman, Oklahoma.
Louella was born on February 14, 1928 in Carter, Oklahoma to Edith Belle Elspy (Reyburn) Smith and Fred Carrol Smith. She was the oldest of five children, followed by Cellia, Eloise, Phyllis, and Freddie.

Her father was a farmer who raised dairy cattle and chickens. She picked cotton, gathered eggs, milked cows, and pumped water when she was growing up, as well as helping with housework and looking after the younger children. After graduating from high school in Delhi, Oklahoma in 1945, Louella worked in Dr. Devanney’s office in Sayre as the doctor’s assistant. She met Tom Everett in early 1952 and they married on May 3 of the same year. She and Tom lived in Sayre for two years, where their daughter Susan was born. They moved to Hollis in 1956. Joel was born in 1957, the year that Tom built their house at 601 North Morton Street, and Brent was born in 1959. When all her children were in school, she became a teacher’s aide at Sally Gillentine Grade School, where she worked for 25 years. By 1977 her children had left for college and then her husband passed away in 1978, leaving her a widow at age 50. She continued her work until her retirement in 1993. She traveled with her church group and to family reunions, as well as staying in close contact with her family. She also managed the business of the family farms and ranchlands, as well as managing her finances and household. Louella was a wonderful cook, a skilled seamstress who made all her and her daughter’s clothing for many years, a farm hand when needed, and a housekeeper who kept her house clean and organized. She crocheted beautifully and made afghans for general use and gifts. She was also an active community and church volunteer. In 2011, Louella decided to move from Hollis, where she had lived for 55 years, to assisted living in Norman where her children could better care for her and she could see her family more often. She made several good friends there and loved participating in activities.

On December 16, 2013, exactly 35 years to the day after she lost her husband, she passed away quietly in her sleep. In addition to her husband, she was also preceded in death by her parents and sister Cellia Mae Smith.

She is survived by her sisters Eloise Kamphaus of Elk City, OK; Phyllis Swagerty and her husband A. L. Swagerty of Fletcher, OK; brother Freddie Joe Smith and his wife Carolyn of Bedford, TX; sisters-in-law Virginia Gibson of Erick, OK and Bertie Lou Campbell of Lebanon, Oregon; daughter Susan Everett of Silver Spring, MD; son Joel Everett of Muskogee, OK; son Brent Everett and his wife Dana Everett of Norman, OK, their daughters Holly Graff of State College, PA, and Chelsea Gherke of Norman, OK and one great grandson, Calvin Thomas Graff of State College, PA, as well as many other beloved relatives and good friends.

The family appreciates floral tributes as well as tribute gifts to the Harmon County Historical Museum, Old Greer County Museum, and the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.

Funeral services for Louella Everett will be at 2 p.m., Wednesday, December 18, 2013, at the Hollis First Baptist Church with A.L. Swagerty officiating. Interment will follow at the Fairmount Cemetery under the direction of Harmon County Funeral Home of Hollis.
