Joyce was born in a farmhouse near Hollis, OK, on May 7, 1930. She graduated from Westview Elementary and Hollis High School where she played basketball and volleyball. Joyce graduated from Oklahoma State Teachers College in Weatherford and later earned a Masters Degree in Education. She married John Raymond Combs in 1950 (divorced in 1979) and three children were born to this marriage. She taught school in Austin and Abilene, TX, and subsequently worked in retail sales, child care, and as a seamstress. In 2000, she developed a crippling neuropathy and was bedbound until her death on November 26, 2013.

Joyce is survived by sons Perry Combs (Gwen) of Jackson, MS, John Cranfill Combs of Lawrenceburg, KY, and Jody Braxton Combs of Harrodsburg, KY; grandsons Ian Gregory Combs (Farah) of Fairhope, AL, and Evan Cranfill Combs (Nichole) of Hattiesburg, MS; great-grandchildren Savannah Marie Combs and Lucas Gregory Combs of Hattiesburg, MS, and Wyatt John Combs of Fairhope, AL; brother Lee Roy Hudson (Sylvia) of Hollis, OK, sisters Margaret Hudson Boddy of Spokane, WA, and Joan Hudson West (John) of Indio, CA; and many nieces and nephews.

Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, W. J. “Jody” Hudson and Viola Worrell Hudson of Hollis, OK, and brothers Carl Hudson and Ralph Hudson.
