Edwin Darrell Brookman, 91, of Hollis passed away Friday, December 2, 2016 at Colonial Manor II Nursing Home in Hollis.

Darrell was born at Tea Cross in Harmon County on July 11, 1925 to Vannie M. and Opal (Curb) Brookman. He graduated from Ron High School in 1943.

Darrell joined the Navy in June of 1944. The first ship Darrell served aboard, The SS John A Johnson, was torpedoed and sank between San Francisco and Honolulu in October of 1944. Of the seventy souls on board, Darrell was one of sixty survivors rescued the next day. Darrell went on to serve with the Pacific Fleet until his discharge in June of 1946.

Darrell returned to Harmon County and married Ruth Mitchell on September 7, 1946 in Childress Texas. They lived and farmed in the Ron and Shrewder Communities, where Judith was born, and Darrell managed the Ron Gin. In the late fifties the family moved to Hollis, where Darin was born, and Darrell managed the Paymaster and later the COOP Gins. After his career as a gin manager Darrell continued his farming and ranching operation. Darrell enjoyed raising cotton, buying horses, raising cattle and hunting quail. He was always known to have a good cotton crop, a good horse and a good bird dog.

Darrell spent most of his life in Harmon County. He was active in the Hollis Riding Club, served on the Hollis School Board and the Board of Directors for the Motley Gin. He and Ruth enjoyed over fifty-four years of marriage before her death on January 19, 2001.

Darrell married Teddie Parr Hamrick in 2004. She preceded him in death on July 14, 2015.

Darrell is survived by his daughter Judith Messenger of Hot Springs, Arkansas, his son Darin and wife Jeanette of Hollis; four grandchildren Amy Hatcher and husband Mark of Kuttawa, Kentucky; Josh Messenger and wife Clayre of Hot Springs Arkansas; Seth Brookman and wife Kary of Hollis; Katy Butchee and husband Dillon of Altus Oklahoma; and four great grandchildren Hadyn Elizabeth and Cash Mitchell Brookman; Boe Madison and Josy Ruth Butchee.
