Philip F. and Sophia QUILLIN

Mt. Vernon Cemetery

Sophia Schaffer was born near Crawfordsville, Indiana, December 23, 1837, was married to Philip F. Quillin, September 26, 1855, not quite 18 years old. She died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. P. Riley of Lamont, March 3, 1917, age 79 years, 3 months and 20 days.

Mr. and Mrs. Quillin celebrated their Golden wedding in 1905, surrounded by their two sons and four daughters, and their numerous grandchildren. They spent nine more years together, and then uncle Philip, or "Daddy" as he was familiarly called was laid in his last resting place, in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery, November 26, 1914.

Aunt Sophia had visited this winter with her daughter, Mrs. R. Haughey, of Crescent City and lately with her son, Omar of Oklahoma City, until she was called to South Haven, Kansas, by the sickness and death of her brother, William Schaffer. While there she took cold and was taken to the home of her son, William, living four miles south of Hunnewell. There she had a siege of pneumonia, and later she went to her daughters at Lamont. She could not regain her strength, and after a week of intense suffering, she went to sleep and to rest. Three little ones had preceded the dear mother to her heavenly home and the six remaining ones were with her during her sickness and are: J. W. Quillin, south of Hunnewell, Kansas, but in Oklahoma, Omar T. Quillin, of Oklahoma City, Mrs. Reat Haughey, of Crescent City; Mrs. Will Pennick, Geary, Mrs. J. T. Riley, Lamont; and Mrs. D. M. Porter of near Billings.

She was loved by all who knew her, and she has many relatives in Indiana and Kansas, who will be sorry to hear of her death. Mrs. N. A. Walton of Valley Falls, Kansas, is a sister of Philip Quillin, and Mrs. Sue Pate and Mrs. Olive Richards of Holton, are nieces. The funeral services were conducted by the Christian minister of Lamont. The Pleasant Hill Church was crowded by friends and relatives who will long mourn the loss of so good a woman.
