Black Bear Creek, Oklahoma June 1901 September 29, 1874 ~ June 23, 1901 Last Saturday a sad accident occurred on Black Bear creek, southwest of this place. A son of A. Jack, aged 27 years, went out to a pond to bathe between 7 and 8 o'clock am, and not returning within a reasonable time, they went out to look for him and found him dead in the deepest place in the pond, which was about nine feet deep. The young man could not swim, and was frequently cautioned against the dangers of going in alone, and has paid the extreme penalty for not heeding the advice given him. Only a very small portion of the pond was beyond his depth, a space about eight feet square, and but little effort would have been required to have propelled him to shallow water, but a drowning man is soon bereft of any intelligent effort, and consequently succumbs to the inevitable. This should be a warning to Garber boys who bathe in our pond, much of which is dangerously deep. |
