Ardmore native Thomas Harry “Tom” Whitmore, 80, passed away peacefully at his Overbrook ranch following an apparent heart attack on Saturday, December 1, 2018.
Tom was born November 21, 1938, at Ardmore to the late Harry Edward Whitmore and Faye Irene Cloar Whitmore. Tom was a graduate of Ardmore High School Class of 1957.
He and the former Lahoma Rose McLaughlin were married February 14, 1958, at Ardmore and celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary earlier this year. Tom and Lahoma had a collaborative and caring relationship, based on mutual support and a deep love for each other and their four children, Marilyn, Sam, Christi and Shelly. A member of the Southwest Baptist Church, Tom had worked as a truck driver, welder, rancher and equipment operator. He could be seen regularly traveling between his Ardmore residence and Overbrook ranch, en route to check on the livestock, hay or loading some of his equipment for a project. A workaholic, Tom was a jack-of-all-trades and master of many; he was very talented, artistic, creative, and innovative. Tom always enjoyed a conversation with a friend (often from two pickups parked in the middle of a country road); his smile would light up their day. A valued member of the community, Tom Whitmore will be missed but not forgotten.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Lahoma Whitmore of the home; his son, Sam Whitmore and Darla of Overbrook; daughters, Marilyn Ashcraft and husband Greg of Austin, Texas, and Christie Whitmore and Shelly McGlocklin, both of Ardmore; his grandchildren who were the pride and joy of his life, Johnathan Ashcraft and wife Dana, Jacob Ashcraft and Kristen Bermea, Becky Ashcraft, Jason Ashcraft, Katelyn Ashcraft, Shayle and Sage McGlocklin, Kori Dennis and husband David, Sarah Warner and husband Acie, and Ranie, Harlie, Ivy, and William Whitmore; great-grandchildren, Paisley and Ava Warner, Mark Dennis, Nadia Ashcraft and one soon to arrive.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Thursday, December 6 in the Centennial Chapel of Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home, Ardmore with Reverend Bruce Kirby, pastor of Southwest Baptist Church officiating.
Interment followed at McAlister Cemetery.
