Graveside services for James Emmit “Son” Giles, 80, of Gainesville, Texas, were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, April 19, at McAlister Cemetery, in rural Carter County near Overbrook, with the Rev. Floyd Flowers officiating. Arrangements, with U.S. Army Military honors, were directed by Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home, Marietta.

Born April 12, 1926, at Marietta, the son of Emmit and Jewel Howard Giles, he died Wednesday, April 12, 2006, at the VA Hospital in Dallas. A resident of Gainesville for the past 23 years, Mr. Giles served in the U.S. Army six years and was a veteran of World War II and the Korean Conflict.

He and Betty Jane Murphy were married October 19, 1954, at Yuma, Arizona, and she preceded him in death on November 29, 1990. Mr. Giles worked as a chef retiring after 29 years. He enjoyed fishing, baseball, boxing and hunting. Mr. Giles was of the Pentecostal faith.

Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and Linda Giles of Pomona, California, Terry and Caren Giles of Newalla, and James A. and Mickey Giles of Gainesville; two daughters and sons-in-law, Jan and Grumpy Nettles of Niceville, Florida and Kathy Franks of Gainesville; two sisters and brother-in-law, Lou and George Reed and Jessie Southerland, all of Gainesville; 20 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his parents; a brother, William “Bud” Giles on October 22, 2005; and a sister, Ruth Shipman on December 31, 2003.
