This burial site is located on the farm now owned by Gary and Betty Armstrong. To reach it, begin at the stop light on Court & Mississippi Streets in Downtown Atoka, and go five miles east on Hwy. 3, turn south .3 mile, then back east approximately 1/2 mile. The Armstrong home is on the south side of the road, and the graves are directly south of the house. Mary Mason who is the daughter of Murrow Armstrong listed below, says the cemetery was known as the Buffalo Cemetery until the Buffalo Indian Church was built across the road north, from that time people used a location west of the church for the cemetery. The old site has five marked graves, and one footstone with initials for which a headstone was not found, and three unmarked graves. It was canvassed May 7, 1980 by Gwen Walker.
If you have family buried in the Old Buffalo Cemetery or can take a gate photo or have obits (with newspapers permission or an obit that you can write) or tombstone photos or individual portraits or can write a short bio or have a history of the cemetery and would like to add your information to this website, contact the area coordinator for more information.
