The Hickory Community cemetery is under the care and protection of the Hickory Cemetery Association. It is well fenced and maintained. The Monuments are in excellent condition, excepting the older marble monuments which are somewhat weathered. I was happy to see that while I was doing the registry, two different individuals stopped to see why I was in the cemetery. The Community of Hickory was established in the late 1800's as a ranching and farming center. There were banks, schools, general mercantile, cotton gins, churches and a post office. There are still many very large ranches in the area. Former Oklahoma govenor Roy Turner had his ranch in the area causing the area to become known as, "The Heart of the Hereford Heaven". Well known ranchers such as John Wayne, Jimmy Dean and President Lyndon Johnson came to this community to purchase the finest Hereford bulls in existence. The population in 1900 was about 1,500. Today it is about 100. Hickory is still a center for ranching, farming and the dairy industry. Several movies and commercials have been filmed here because of the frontier, prairie atmosphere.
