Vickie 'Trout' Richards, and Ola Mae 'Griffin' Trout walked and recorded this cemetery in October 1999. Some dates have been added since then.
From the main road in front of the Battiest School, turn south and go about a mile to the top of the hill. Cemetery on Right side of road. There is a sign saying that the Battiest Cemetery was established in September 1908. The oldest tombstones are an Amber Crawford whom died in 1909, and Irma May Crudup whom died September 17,1910.
Dan J. and Mary Ann (Blake) Griffin donated land for the original part of the cemetery in 1908. Then the 2nd addition is thought to be donated by Weyerhaeuser. The latest addition was donated by Derell L. and Carolyn Davis in the 1990's.
In about 1950 the Home Demonstration made concret blocks and put names and dates on the unmarked graves that they knew who was buried there. Now most of the concret blocks are unreadable. Also there is 85 graves marked with only rocks, and no names. These are very old graves.
The first row on the North side, starts right against the East fence. Graves marked with concret blocks.
