Orion Cemetery


The funeral for Ava E. Simmons, 88, of Fairview, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11, 2008, at Midway Assembly of God Church. Pastors Tommy Pitts and Jerry McCamey will officiate. Burial will be in Orion Cemetery . Arrangements are by Redinger Funeral Home, Seiling.

She was born July 29, 1920, in Alpena, Ark., to Wesley Thomas and Ellen Ormie Barkley Bowers and died Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at Fairview Fellowship Home.

She moved with her family to Major County at an early age. They moved to Cotton County where she began school. They moved back to Major County where she attended several country schools, including Liberty. She graduated from Longdale High School in 1939.

She married Thomas Samuel Simmons Jan. 24, 1940, at Midway Church. They made their home in Colorado and Utah during World War II and returned to Orion in Major County in 1947. She was a homemaker and seamstress and a member of Orion Homemakers Club and Midway Assembly of God Church, where she taught Sunday school and Bible school. He died Jan. 29, 1983.

Surviving are four sons, Sam Simmons and Elvin Simmons, both of Chester , Ronald Simmons of Mooreland and Doyt Simmons of Woodward; one sister, Wesleta Shaules of Billings, Mont.; 14 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Tom, she was preceded in death by one daughter, four sisters and one grandson.
