October 24, 1938 - June 12, 2020

Eugene Ray “Gene” Pannell passed away in his home surrounded by family on June 12, 2020. He was born October 24, 1938 to Emmitt and Josie Pannell at their family farm near Taloga, Oklahoma. He was the oldest of four children.

On June 22, 1964, he married the love of his life Barbara Annette Burrell of Spearman, Texas. To this union were born two children: Jovanka Gene and Todd Ray. Gene started working at the age of 16 for a railroad in Kansas. He went on to work nearly 25 years in the oilfield and then retired after 15 years at Major County District III.

Gene enjoyed spending time outdoors with his family. He would often go hunting and fishing with his father, his brother Otis, and his son Todd. He and his family loved to go fishing and sailing on their sailboat, often spending several days out on the water. Gene enjoyed working on anything mechanical, but truly loved restoring John Deere two cylinder tractors. For years, he was an active member of the National Two-Cylinder Club and restored a total of 9 “Johnny Poppers”. This love of old tractors would later be shared with his son, Todd, and grandson, Dalton who restored tractors of their own with grandpa’s help.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents; brother Otis of South Lakes, Texas and sister Carolyn Anson of Waukomis, Oklahoma. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Barbara; his brother, Don Pannell of Chester, Oklahoma; his children, Jovanka Hicks and husband Mike of Longdale, Oklahoma; Todd Pannell and wife Susan of Longdale, Oklahoma; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Brandon Hicks and wife Chelsey and their son Orion of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Bailey Hicks and Dalton Pannell, both of Longdale, Oklahoma.

Graveside services were held Wednesday, June 17 at Orion Cemetery with Chap-lain Donnetta Hunter officiating. Services are under the direction of Pierce Funeral Home, Fairview, Oklahoma. Memorials may be made to the Lupus Foundation of America or to P.T.S.D. research through the funeral home at P.O. Box 15, Fairview, OK 73737. Condolences may be made online at www.piercefuneralhomes.com.
