Ruby Mae Schmidt was born in Shelly, Oklahoma to George and Lizzie (Dyck) Willems on January 16, 1925. She went to her heavenly home on Wednesday, December 12, 2018 in Enid, Oklahoma. She and most of her family moved to Reedley, California when she was 18.

While living in the Corn/Bessie Oklahoma area she helped support the family by picking cotton and other jobs. As a teen, she asked Jesus to be her savior and she was baptized in the river along with a large group new believers.

As a young woman, she went along with a group of friends and relatives to visit a cousin Jonah Schmidt in a CPS camp near Reedley California. There she met the love of her life, Vernon Schmidt. Before long they knew they wanted to spend their lives together. And they did! Two days short of 73 years together! What a great life they had. She was an expert in baking and quilting.

Always a hostess even most recently when she still had her kitchen. She always asked if you had eaten and would suggest a homemade meal or dessert; then proceed to the kitchen to prepare something delicious. Most recently in “The Home” she would encourage you to order a meal and eat with them. When you didn't, she would say, “oh you …” in a disappointed tone. Even when your visit was a surprise, she could pull together a prepared meal or faspa out of the freezer. Ruby and Vernon were avid gardeners, canning and freezing their vegetables. She enjoyed bringing fruit back from California to make jellies and pies.

Her hands were always busy. If she wasn’t stemming beans, her hands were busy with needlework or sewing and altering clothes. She even packed up her sewing machine (a black Singer) along on a trip to California to sew dresses for a granddaughter's wedding. Ruby was extremely frugal and resourceful…always able to make something beautiful with what she had on hand. She enjoyed making clothes, gifts, baby blankets, and quilts for family, as well as gifts for wedding and baby showers for friends. Making of wheat/rye bread, zwieback and ooey gooey cinnamon rolls. She enjoyed meat canning, noodle making, sausage stuffing, and Quilting for the MCC Sale with her friends.

The only thing she liked about Halloween was when her little friends from Learn and Play would come to her door and call her Miss Ruby. She enjoyed investing time with her Pioneer Girls pals and listening to the young ones learn their Bible verses in AWANA.

Ruby loved to take drives in the country to see nature. She even commissioned a local artist to paint the desert scene of the family's move from Oklahoma to California. She and Dad loved bird watching together. She enjoyed reading Christian articles and singing hymns and spiritual songs like “Heavenly Sunshine” and “Joy, Joy, Joy in my Heart is Ringing.” When waking us up she would sing “Good Morning to You”...She liked to learn and talk about politics and her political party.

Many of her friends have gone to be with the Lord before her.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Edna (and husband Arnold) Wedel, Viola (and husband Jack) Bolt; brother George (and wife Mary Ann) Willems; brothers-in-laws: A.J. Pugh, Kenneth Schmidt and Paul Thomas. She is survived by her husband Vernon; sisters: Beatrice Pugh and Katherine (and husband Henry) Rogalsky; brothers: Harry (and wife Elvina), John (and wife Diane), and LeRoy (and wife Lilly) Willems; sisters-in-law: Verda Mae Thomas, Carol Schmidt, Diann (and husband Lon) Patrick; sons: Tarry (and wife Linda) Schmidt of Livermore, CA., Darrell (and wife Gracie) Schmidt of Lahoma, OK; daughters: Elaine (and husband Gene) Lorton of Mustang, OK; and Barbara Schmidt of Enid, OK; granddaughters: Tami (and husband Sean) Wysock, Kristen (and husband Alex) Neicu, Alisha (and husband Lee) Scott, Julie (and husband Randy) Wilson, Starkisha Sneede, Nikki (and husband Jeff) Hill, Melissa Briggs, Alison (and Ryan) Squire, and grandson Tobias Schmidt; great grandchildren: Jackson, Savannah, and Sierra Wysock; Alle and Kayla Neicu; Nick Folkes; Cheri, Phoenix, Celia, and Chance Wilson; Lindsay, Josh, Allison, Ty, and Emily Hill; Trevor Briggs; Cooper and Deacon Squire; great-great grandchildren: Levi and Leia; and a host of nieces and nephews.

Visitation with the family present will be from 6-8:00 p.m., Monday evening, December 17, 2018 at Pierce Funeral Home, 721 S. Main, Fairview, OK. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, December 18, 2018 at the Fairview Mennonite Brethren Church. Interment will follow in the North M.B. Cemetery under the direction of Pierce Funeral Home, Fairview, OK. Condolences may be made online at www.piercefuneralhomes.com.
