Sunday services for Mrs. J. W. Bird

One of Enid's most active and beloved women, Mrs. J. W. Bird, wife of Judge bird, 2014 E. Broadway, died at an Enid hospital early Friday, following a long lingering illness which had kept her bedfast since July.

While news of her death was not unexpected, still it brought sorrow to innumerable Enid and Northwest Oklahoma residents, as Mrs. Bird had been active in church, club, school and social work in this region ever since the opening of the Cherokee Strip.

With her parents she came from Caldwell, Kansas, to a farm homestead claim near Lamont when the Cherokee Strip opened, and not long afterward she became a schoolteacher at Pond Creek.

To Enid in 1923

It was there she met Judge Bird, whom she later married. In 1923 the family moved to Enid and has resided here since.

In addition to Judge Bird, Mrs. Bird is survived by Mrs. Glenn McCord of Arlington, New Jersey, and Dr. Joseph W. Bird of Washington, D. C., daughter and son, two grandchildren and two brothers who reside in California.

Services will be in the Central Christian church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 in the church where she maintained membership for many years. Rev. Ray Snodgrass will be in charge, assisted by Dr. Thomas H. McDowell, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church.

Burial at Pond Creek

Burial will be in the family plot in the Pond Creek Cemetery with the Henninger funeral home in charge.

Ever since Mrs. Bird was a young woman she has been active in community and social work. She was closely identified with Phillips University activities for a number of years. She belonged to numerous clubs and she gave book reviews, led in musical affairs and took part in virtually every movement that has been launched in Enid and surrounding area through the many years to better the community and make life more worthwhile.
