Bayard Cemetery


Mass of Christian Burial for Gaylord Cyril Shipley, 72, of Deer Creek, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary Catholic Church, Medford. The Rev. Mike Whellahand will officiate. Burial will be in Bayard Cemetery, southwest of Deer Creek. A prayer vigil will be 6 p.m. Friday at Hills-Ely Funeral Chapel, Medford.

He was born Feb. 18, 1935, on a farm near Deer Creek to Cyril Haskell and Mary Christine Haunschild Shipley and died Tuesday, May 8, 2007, at Integris Bass Baptist Health Center.

He attended Deer Creek school, graduating in 1953. He attended Northwestern Oklaho-ma State University, receiving a bachelor of arts degree in social studies in 1961 and a master’s degree in teaching in 1968. He was assistant football coach at Pratt (Kan.) Junior College. He coached, taught and was elementary school principal at Buhler, Kan.

In 1973, the family moved back to Deer Creek to farm the land his grandfather homesteaded. He was high school principal and athletic director at Deer Creek-Lamont High School, retiring in 1984. He was a semi-retired farmer at the time of his death.

Survivors include his wife Arleen, of the home; two sons, Rusty and Randy, both of Deer Creek; his mother, Mary Shipley of Deer Creek; a sister, Marilyn Wirtz of Medford; and two granddaughters.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home, P.O. Box 280, Medford, OK 73759, to St. Mary Catholic Church building fund,.
