Walter Scott Hendren, M.D.

Walter Scott HENDREN , M.D., 87, loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, and healer to patients, passed away Oct. 2, 2004. He was born July 26, 1917 in Memphis, TN to Walter and Sarah Hendren.

In 1941, Dr. Hendren graduated from the Univ. of Oklahoma School of Medicine and started his internship at John Hopkins Hospital prior to WW II.

In 1942, he entered the US Army, where he served with distinction in the European Theatre at Normandy; Battle of the Bulge and the relief of German Concentration camps, while receiving a Bronze Star and a Presidential Citation and promoted to rank of Major.

After the war, Dr. Hendren returned to OKC to finish his studies at St. Anthony's Hospital and start his medical practice as the first internist in the Capitol Hill area. He retired in 1993.

During his medical practice, Dr. Hendren was Director of Medical Education at St. Anthony's Hospital for 25 years, served on the Faculty of the Univ. of Oklahoma School of Medicine; was a pioneer and first Chief of Staff at South Community Hospital (now Integris Southwest Medical Center) in 1965; served as President of OKC Clinical Society in 1967, followed by President of the Oklahoma State Medical Assoc. in 1968.

Dr. Hendren is survived by his life partner and wife of 63 years, Martha, who lives in OKC; son, William Scott Hendren and wife, Linda of Edmond, OK; son, Martin Paul Hendren and wife, Donna of San Ramon, CA; grandson, Jeff Hendren and wife, Lorie of Edmond, OK and great grandchildren: Jordan & Lauren Hendren; granddaughter, Jana Reeves & husband, Lee with great grandchild, Drew; granddaughter, Whitney Hendren of San Ramon, CA; and granddaughter, Taylor Hendren of San Ramon, CA; grandson, Chris Bryant & wife, Tami and great grandchild, Cody; granddaughter, Beth Wade & husband, Kevin and great grandchild, Madison.

We will miss his intelligence, wisdom, mentoring, and wonderful sense of humor and his patients will remember his compassionate care. As a lifelong Sooner fan he would have said "Go Big Red."

Services to celebrate his life will be held 10:00 AM Tuesday Oct. 5, 2004 at the South Colonial Chapel of Vondel L. Smith & Son Mortuary with interment to follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens.
