Woodward, Okla. - Delbert was born on February 23, 1930 to Archie R. Whitenack and Pearl Collier Whitenack in Mooreland, Oklahoma. He married Gwen Ann Blakesley on October 21, 1950 in Mooreland, Oklahoma. Delbert went back to college at OSU and Gwen worked as a R.N. at the University Health Clinic. In 1954 Delbert received his B.S. in Agriculture Education. The summer of 1954 Delbert and Gwen began their journey abroad to Jimma, Ethiopia, where Delbert taught science and Gwen was the nurse for the students and faculty. During their six years in Ethiopia they made many lifelong friends.

In 1960, Delbert and his family returned to the United States and Delbert enrolled at OSU, College of Veterinary Medicine in the doctoral program. He completed his doctorate in May 1965. The summer of 1965 he accepted a position in the Veterinary Pathology Department at Michigan State University. In 1970 he became a full-time pathologist in the diagnostic laboratory at Michigan State University.

In 1975, Delbert began his employment at Oklahoma State University and served as Pathologist, at the Oklahoma Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory; Assistant Professor, Department of Pathology, until December 31, 1976; Associate Professor, January 1, 1977 to 1980, and Professor from 1981 until his retirement in March, 1995.

Delbert was a member of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, American Veterinary Medical Association, Oklahoma Veterinary Medical Association, American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians and Phi Zeta.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Pearl; his sister, Eunavaye Riggs, all of Mooreland, Oklahoma, and his wife, Gwen Ann.

He is survived by his son William K. and his wife, Melissa and their three children, Kadi, Keith and Kylar Whitenack, all of Tulsa, Oklahoma; one daughter, Jill Thompson and her husband, Jim Thompson, of Houston, Texas; and one brother, William H.Whitenack and his wife Jane, of Shawnee, Kansas.

Delbert L. Whitenack, 80, died on February 10, 2011, at his home in Stillwater, Oklahoma. There will be a Rosary Service at 3:00 P.M. on Monday, February 14, at Strode Funeral Home Chapel in Stillwater, Oklahoma. His funeral service will be Tuesday, February 15, at 10:00 A.M. at Strode Funeral Home Chapel in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Family will greet friends from 2 P.M.-5 P.M. on Wednesday, February 16, at Billings Funeral Home in Mooreland, Oklahoma. Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, February 17, at 2:00 P.M. at Mooreland Cemetery in Mooreland, Oklahoma.
