Graveside: 10:00 AM Friday, April 14th, 2017 Mooreland Cemetery
Mona Ruttman, 90 year-old Woodward County resident, died April 7, 2017, at Concordia Living Center in Oklahoma City. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 am Friday, April 14 at the Mooreland Cemetery wtih Nancy Feese Ryan officiating with the Billings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Mona Maxine Markham Ruttman was born February 24, 1927, east of Renfrow, Oklahoma, to LaFoy Markham and Bertha Elizabeth Merritt. She grew up on the family farm outside of Renfrow. Mona attended Flint School, a one-room school house, for the first eight years of her education. She then attended Caldwell Public Schools, Caldwell, Kansas, graduating from Caldwell High School in 1945. She attended Pittsburg State University, Pittsburg, Kansas, earning a bachelors of science in education degree May 28, 1953; and a masters of science in history degree August 8, 1963. While at Pittsburg State, she was an active member and chapter officer of Sigma Sigma Sigma, a national women’s sorority.
Mona was married on August 30, 1953, to Calvin Douglas Ruttman in Caldwell, Kansas. They made their home in Woodward County in Oklahoma. After graduation from Pittsburg State, she taught in the Woodward Public Schools for thirty-four years and was honored on June 4, 1984, for her years “of dedicated service to the boys and girls of the Woodward School District.”
Mona was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, where she faithfully served as a member and provided assistance with the food pantry. She was a member of Delta Kappa Gamma, the Woodward Retired Teachers organization, and served on the Plains Indians and Pioneers Museum Board. She gave selflessly of her time to the museum organizing archives and completing history projects. Mona enjoyed reading, history, family genealogy, traveling, and needle-point. Her last trip to visit family in Georgia, enabled her to tour Andersonville, a Confederate Civil War prison camp, a topic of her master’s thesis.
She was preceded in death by her husband Calvin Douglas Ruttman on August 25, 2009; parents, LaFoy and Bertha Markham; brother, Melvin Markham; and sister, Velma Irons. She was also preceded in death by parents-in-law, John Martin Ruttman, Jr. and Edna Mae Miller Ruttman; brothers-in-law, Beryle Elwood, John Alden Ruttman, Kenneth Martin Ruttman; and sisters-in law, Marcella Ruttman and Bonnie Ruttman.
Survivors include her brother, Raymond Leon Markham of McKinney, Texas; brother-in-law, Lloyd Ruttman and wife Gloria of Overland Park, Kansas; and sisters-in-law, Louise Marie Ruttman Elwood of Moore and Myrtle Ruttman of Enid; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Plains Indians and Pioneers Museum of Woodward or the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation with Billings Funeral Home accepting contributions.
