Military Services Monday for Elmer Highfill

Military services were held Monday afternoon for Elmer Highfill, who passed away Friday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Kenneth Chapple in Mooreland. Although he had been ill, his death came as a surprise and a shock to relatives and friends.

Services were held at the Methodist church and were conducted by Rev. Cloyce Holland, Rev. Joe Pask Van and Rev. Charley Henderson with burial in Mooreland Cemetery under the direction of Knittel Funeral Home.

Elmer Asa Highfill, eldest son of Bennett A. and Mary E. Highfill, was born July 3, 1887, near Nashville, Kingman County, Kansas; and departed this life on April 13, 1951 at the age of 63 years 9 mo. and 10 days in Mooreland, Okla., at the home of his daughter.

He moved with his parents to Woodward County, Okla. in 1913 and has resided here ever since.

On Dec 23, 1924, he was united in marriage to Elizabeth Ann Davis. Th this union was born seven children.

Elmer became a Christian at an early age. He was a member of the Haskew Baptist Church and served as the first Sunday School superintendent when the new church was built. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge; and active in all activities for the betterment of his community

He entered the United States Army in 1918, and served 11 months overseas with the Medical Corps Base Hospital 87 in France.

Preceding him in death were two children: a daughter, Laura Belle, and a son, Elmer Lee; two brothers, Alvin and Hesikiah; and his mother Mary Etta Highfill.

Mourning his passing are his wife, Elizabeth Ann: daughters, Marie (Mrs. Kenneth) Chapple of Mooreland; Jennie (Mrs. Bill) Laird of Woodward: Lela of Woodward: and Vera of the home: four grandchildren; his father and stepmother, Mr. and Mrs. Bennett A. Highfill of Woodward; five brothers, Leslie, Charlie, Harry, Bennett, and Kenneth, all of Mooreland; three sisters, Minnie (Mrs Clyde) Leslie of Wichita, Kans.; Maude (Mrs. Ira) Clayton of Cedardale, Okla.; and Ethel (Mrs Earl) Brankel of Mooreland, Okla; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Elmer was a devoted husband, a loving father and a friend to all who knew him.

Funeral Held Monday For Elizabeth Highfill

Mrs. Elizabeth Ann Highfill died Friday, March 17 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Jane Laird in Woodward, following a year's illness.

She was born Feb. 24, 1893 in Eskridge, Kansas and came to Mooreland when a small girl. The was a pioneer school teacher, teaching at rural schools around Mooreland.

In December of 1925 she was united in Marriage to Elmer A. Highfill at Mooreland, and to this union five daughters were born: Mary McDaniel Amarillo, Texas; Marie Chapple, Mooreland; Jane Laird, Woodward; Lela Brock, Redford, Va.; and Vera McNaught, La Verne, Calif.

Mr. Highfill preceded her in death on April 13, 1951 and she moved to Woodward in 1952. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Woodward.

Besides her daughters she is survived on brother, John Davis, Denison, Texas and three sisters, Mrs. Margaret Locke, Ft. Worth, Texas; Mrs. Ellen Phillips, Denison, Texas; and Mrs. Harry Highfill, Mooreland; also 12 grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday at the Baptist church in Woodward with Rev. Earl Bengs of the Mooreland Baptist church, officiating. Burial was in Mooreland cemetery.
