Joseph E. "Joe" Coats, 57-year-old Enid resident and former Woodward area resident, died Saturday, April 29, 2006 at his home in Enid. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 3, 2006 in the First United Methodist Church of Mooreland. Interment will be in the Mooreland Cemetery with the United States Marine Corps providing military honors. Arrangements are under the direction of the Billings Funeral Home

Joseph Eugene Coats was born May 25, 1948 in Wichita, Kan. to Clarence Eugene and Ethel Anne (Jackson) Coats. Joe and his family lived in Wichita, Kan. until 1957 when they moved to Mooreland. He graduated from Mooreland High School in 1966. Joe was inducted into the United States Marine Corps on Oct. 31, 1966. He was awarded numerous medals and commendations during his tour of duty in Vietnam. Joe was honorably discharged in 1970. He was united in marriage to Dalene Glaze on April 13, 1970 in Woodward, Okla. To this union two children were born Cynthia Marie and Kevin Joe. Joe went to work for the State Highway Department in maintenance in 1970. He also worked for Gibsons, Atwoods, and worked in the oil field as a roughneck for a period of time. He married Cathy Reed on Sept. 3, 1977 in the First United Methodist Church in Mooreland, Okla. To this union one son was born, Jackson Reed. He went to work for ANR in 1980 as a Technical Operator and worked there for 19 years. Joe went to work for the State Highway Department and retired from there in 2003. On May 28, 2004 he was married to Letha Heinrich in Stamps, Ark. They made their home in Enid and have lived there since that time.

Joe loved the Sooners, metal detecting, trains and coin collecting. He loved his family and loved spending time with them.

He is survived by his wife Letha of the home in Enid; one daughter, Cynthia Pierce and husband Bryan of Freedom; two sons Kevin Coats and wife Jerri of Blackwell; Jackson Coats of Woodward; his grandchildren who knew him as Papa Joe, Ashtyn and Ranson Pierce; Dakota, Madisyn, and Treyton Coats; one brother David Coats and wife Joyce of Satanta, Kan.; one sister Kathy Coats of Oklahoma City; extended family, Dana and Lonn Luddington and their children, Mariah and Casey; Patricia Dauphin; Letha’s children, LaVeda West and husband J.P. of Crescent; Tina Ayers of Enid; Theresa Scott of Enid; Johnathon Hice of Cushing; her grandchildren, Ethan West, John Adam West, Samaya Scott, Sabriam Scott, Austin Jesse Joyce Doyle; other relatives and many good friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Kevin Mark Coats in 1974.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Disabled American Veterans with the funeral home as custodian of the fund.
