Betty Ruth Hilton Selman

February 11, 1922 ~ November 11, 2019

Betty Selman, 97 year old Freedom area resident, died Monday, November 11, 2019. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Thursday, November 14, 2019 in the Billings Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

Betty Ruth (Hinton) Selman was born on February 11, 1922 near Freedom, Oklahoma; she was the daughter of John David and Ruth (Walker) Hinton. She was united in marriage to James Lynn Selman, they were blessed with two children, Bill Selman; and Cheryl (Selman) Bensinger. Betty taught school in Freedom for a few years and participated in the designing of the new school in Freedom.

She leaves a legacy of caring, she was a caretaker to her mother, her son Bill, who became ill due to diabetes, and sister Barbara, who suffered from Alzheimers for many years.

She was a member of the Oklahoma Cattlewomens Association, president of the Cowbells, and participated the Beef Check Off program.

Betty was a member of the First Christian Church. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, PEO, and a Gamma member

Her most significant accomplishment was the establishment of the Selman Bat Caves with the help of her daughter Cheryl. The site was part of the historic Selman Ranch, homesteaded in the early 1900's. Betty donated 320 acres and several caves to the University of Central Oklahoma. The Selman Cave system is one of the largest gypsum caves in Oklahoma, and supports five species of bats. It has developed into an outstanding conservation education tool. Betty was truly a giving person she gave of her time, she gave momentarily, she gave her love, not only to her family but to anyone in need.

Betty is survived by her grandchildren, nieces and nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; son; daughter and siblings.
