John Nelson was born October 20, 1946, in Woodward, Oklahoma to James Robert and Wilda “Billie” (Rinker) Nelson. His family moved to Kansas for much of his younger years before returning to Woodward, where he graduated with the class of 1964.

After high school, John entered the US Army and served during the Vietnam War. During his service, he earned various medals, including the Army Commendation Medal and The South Vietnamese Defense Medal.

After John’s honorable discharge, he attended Northwestern Oklahoma State University and graduated with a degree in Education. He was the owner of Woodward Painting and Decorating for many years, doing remodeling and home construction in the Woodward area.

John married Joyce Geyston on January 11, 1974, and together they raised three children. They have made their home in Woodward since that time.

John retired in 2015. He spent his time enjoying his family, traveling with his wife and attending grandchildren’s sporting events. His 3 great granddaughters were very special to him. He also enjoyed duck hunting with his brother-in-law, and in his earlier years he enjoyed motorcycle rides with his brother and several good friends from Woodward.

John is survived by his wife, Joyce, of the home; his daughter Rhonda Owens and husband Danny of Buffalo; two sons Rod Nelson of Woodward, and Brian Nelson and wife Melissa (Fritzler) of Amarillo, Texas; grandchildren Lance Owens, Megan (Owens) and husband Matthew Thomas; Nicole (Nelson) and husband Travis Thiessen, Lane, Logan, and Loryn Nelson; and his great granddaughters Taytum, Emma, and Taylee. He’s also survived by a sister, Jeanne Wise of North Carolina, and Larry Nelson and wife Linda of Tennessee; other relative and many friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Bob Nelson, and other close family members. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the charity of your choice, with the funeral home accepting the memorials.
