Roger Dean KASSIK

Union Center Cemetery

Funeral services for Roger Kassik will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 8, 2023, at Marshall Funeral Home Chapel with Michael Floyd officiating. Private burial will be in the Union Center Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Alva.

Roger Dean Kassik, son of Fred and Velma (Sweeney) Kassik, was born on May 10, 1938, at Dacoma, Oklahoma, and passed this life on February 2, 2023, at the age of 84 years, 9 months and 2 days.

He attended 12 years of school at Dacoma Public School, graduating high school in 1956. He also attended college for one year at Northwestern State College at Alva. Roger was a member of the basketball and baseball teams while attending school and also of the F.F.A. chapter for four years. He enlisted in the Oklahoma National Guard and served our country for a few years until receiving his Honorable Discharge.

Always being the high achiever at most anything he chose to accomplish, farming and ranching were at the top of his list. He started early in life towards a goal of success in that career and accomplished that goal on February 2, 2023, when he passed this life on earth to be with our Heavenly Father.

Roger was blessed with his loving and hardworking parents and two little sisters, Sharon Rae and Vickie Lou. Roger started driving the 1938 Allis Chalmers tractor at age 8 or 9 and that began his lifelong career of a dedicated farmer/rancher. He was very adamant at becoming the proud and successful husband, dad, grandfather, and great-grandfather that he was until his final day on earth.

He and his high school sweetheart, Pauline, actually met in third grade at Dacoma. While getting his education, one of his pleasures was teasing the girls in his class, with one of them being Pauline. If you were to ask his sisters today, I'm certain they could tell you of some stories and pranks he had for them also. But on the other hand, he was proud of them and would have their backs in time of need.

Roger and Pauline started dating in high school. With a few bumps along their journey, they became engaged and married July 31, 1958. (Had to wait until after harvest and the ground all tilled, Fred said). It became a familiar statement through the years that spilled over into many long hours of hard work.

Later in the marriage, one of the joys of their lives, Lynni Rojean was born on June 21, 1962. Of course, the fun and experience of parenting is a whole new life of cherished memories. Five years later there was news of a new baby coming and of course, no sonograms those days so it would be a surprise of the gender. On February 21, 1967, "It's a Girl" was announced and her name would be Dawn DaLene. So now we have our little family and continue trying to maintain that goal of successful farming.

The years have passed (like 70 some) and time started taking its toll on Roger's health, beginning with pneumonia of a high degree came with a vengeance, then soon cancer appears, and also damages his healthy body, along with heart issues apparent as well.

His battle has been ongoing for several years, but with the care of wonderful doctors and nurses, loving friends and family jumping in to help Roger the best they could Roger has continued on his journey of life and goals. He also turned a helping hand to others when things got rough. He was often a man of few words but was strong and caring, and to this day, if you were to look on his office bulletin board you will find several uncashed checks written by farmers and friends just like him.

Besides his parents, Fred and Velma, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Gene Greb.

Roger is survived by his wife, Pauline of Dacoma; his daughters, Lynni Greb of Dacoma and special friend, Matt Lynn, of Plains, Kansas, and Dawn Burkes and special friend, Michael Floyd, of Dacoma; sisters, Sharon Higby and husband, Mike, of Turpin, and Vickie Deaton and friend, Walter, of Auburn, Kansas; three grandchildren, Koy Koehn of Dacoma, Baye Burkes and wife, Mollie, of Oxford, Kansas, and Gage Burkes of Oxford, Kansas; three great grandchildren, Brooklyn Burkes, Ashura Burkes, and Ophelia Burkes; other relatives and many friends.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to Share Medical Center.
