Joe Marlin Akers, 83, Alva

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Babe; one brother, Jimmie Akers; and one sister, June Waller.

Joe is survived by three brothers, Jack Akers and his wife, Joyce, of Alva; Gene Akers and his wife, Irene, of Enid, and John Dean Akers and his wife, Joann, of Bartlesville; one nephew who he helped raise, Frank Riley of Salado, Texas; two nieces who he helped raise, Jodi Keltner and her husband, Gary, of Wichita, Kan., and Carolyn Wilson and her husband, Ralph, of Pampa, Texas; one brother-in-law, Leo Waller of Tulsa; one sister-in-law, Wilma Riley of Alva; other relatives and many friends.

Celebration of Life Services will be 10 a.m. March 26 at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Dave Imming officiating. Interment will be in the Sacred Heart Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home of Alva.

Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Alva Firefighters Association.

Alva – Mass of resurrection for Babe Akers, 75, who died Sunday at the Alva Share Medical Center, will be at 10:30 AM Wednesday at the Alva Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Celebrant will be Dave Imming, pastor. Burial will be in Alva Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery under direction of Wharton Funeral Chapel.

She was born December 16, 1915, on a farm 4 miles West and 2 miles south of Alva to Michael and Mary Kele a Kish. She attended Goshen Grade School, Northwestern State High School and Northwestern State College where she received her bachelor of arts degree in Spanish and English in 1935.

On May 30, 1938 she married Joe M. Akers at Medford. They lived in Alva, moving in 1945 to St. Louis, Missouri, where she worked at the public library. In 1948 they returned to Alva. In 1952, they opened Lot – a – Burger in Alva and operated it until 1980. She was a member of Alva Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Surviving are her husband; and one sister, Wilma Riley of Alva.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four sisters and four brothers.

Memorials may be made through the funeral home to the church.
