Funeral services for Celia Roots will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at Marshall Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor Taylor Anderson officiating. Burial will follow in the Alva Municipal Cemetery under the direction of Marshall Funeral Home.
Celia Lorraine, daughter of Cecil Vernon and Nina Ailene (Zimmer) Reed, was born June 12, 1936, at Yakima, Washington, and passed away peacefully May 18, 2026, at Alva at the age of 89 years, 11 months and 6 days.
Celia was raised in Alva where she graduated in 1954 from Alva High School. On August 4, 1954, she was united in marriage to James Russell Roots at Medicine Lodge, Kansas. To this union two children were born: Roger and Rhonda. They made their home several places before settling in Moore, Oklahoma in 1965. In 1999, she and Russell returned to her hometown of Alva where she has lived the past 27 years.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. Celia loved to play bridge with her friends and was an avid reader, especially a good mystery or thriller. She and Russell enjoyed traveling with the Do-Little Camping Club.
Besides her parents, Cecil and Ailene, she was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 62 years, Russell; and her son, Roger Roots.
Celia is survived by her daughter, Rhonda Barlow and her husband, Bill, of Overland Park, Kansas; her brother, Larry Reed and his wife, Kathleen, of Alva; her twin grandsons, Daniel Barlow of Overland Park, Kansas, and Andrew Barlow of Denver, Colorado; nephews and niece, Matt Reed and his wife, Maryse, of London, England, Scott Reed of Oklahoma City, J.V. Reed and his wife, Laurie, of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and Yolanda Tullis and her husband, Jason, of Cherokee; other relatives and many friends.
Memorial contributions may be made through the funeral home to the Alva Public Library.
