Nellie Jo (Pickelsimer) McConnell

Nellie McConnell was born October 29, 1927 in Canute, Oklahoma to Blanche and Thomas Pickelsimer. She passed away May 10, 2017 at her home in Elk City, Oklahoma at the age of 89 years, 6 months and 11 days.

Nellie grew up on the family farm, north of Canute, where she attended grade school at Cottonwood and later Canute where she graduated in 1945. After graduation, she attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University and was later married to R. G. McConnell at Cordell, Oklahoma on October 14, 1946. 10 days after their marriage, R. G. left to serve the United States in the military and Nellie moved to Elk City where she found employment at the G. C. Mitchell Insurance Agency. After R. G. returned, they made their home north of Canute until 1955 when they moved to Ashland, Kansas, Laverne, Oklahoma and Magnolia, Arkansas before returning to the farm north of Canute in 1965 where they made their home, raised their family, farmed and raised cattle. Nellie was a member of the Eastside Baptist Church and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States for the last 40 years and tending her flowers and gardens. Her passion in life was her family and she took great pride in being a wonderful, mother and grandmother (Nanny) to her children and grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Nellie is survived by her husband, R. G., of the home. 2 sons, Tom McConnell and wife, Jan, of Elk City, Oklahoma and Larry McConnell and wife, Lindy, of Canute, Oklahoma; 3 grandchildren, Amy McClure and husband, Greg, of Dacoma, Oklahoma, Joey McConnell and wife, Joni, of Elk City, Oklahoma, Rae Lynn Foster and husband, Chris, of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma; 8 great grandchildren, Taelor Valentiner, Brieanna McClure, Gracie McClure, Will McClure, Wyatt McConnell, Josie McConnell, Ellie Foster and Hannah Foster; a great granddaughter, Blaklei Valentiner, a cousin, Breck Combs and wife, Arlene, of Bartlesville, Oklahoma and a host of many other friends.

The family suggests memorial donations be made to the Eastside Baptist Church, 421 North Booth, Elk City, OK 73644
