Margaret F. (Spradlin) Alexander
Feb 18, 1927 - Mar 23, 2013

Margaret F. Alexander, 86, passed away Saturday, March 23, 2013, at her home in Guymon.

The daughter of Ruth (Bradford) and Archibald Spradlin, she was born February 18, 1927, at the family farm near Dill City, Oklahoma.  Margaret graduated from Dill City High School and during the War years, young Margaret Spradlin only attended one semester of college before she began her long career in education.  Her first teaching job, at the age of 17, was teaching high school English to students, some of which were older than she.

As a wonderful educator, Mrs. Alexander continued teaching for the next 46 years, enriching the lives of many grade schoolers in Ardmore, Norman and more recently at Academy School in Guymon.  She retired from teaching but never retired from helping children. During her golden years, Margaret tutored and substituted in the Guymon school system.

Margaret Spradlin met a young handsome veteran on a blind date, and she and Jack Perkins Alexander later married on July 13, 1947.  Their 65 years of love and devotion to each other, family, God and country, were a wonderful example to their family and friends.  Margaret, lovingly called “Nanny,” continued to be extremely involved in her grandchildren and great grandchildren’s lives.  She attended many ballgames and activities, tutored them in their schoolwork, and was able to babysit many of them.   Margaret was a longtime member of Grace Southern Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Jack Alexander; two daughters, Diane Livesay and husband, David; Rebecca Brown and husband, Blake, all of Guymon; a sister, Jeane McClanahan and husband, Eugene of San Diego, California; three grandchildren, Stephanie Chapman and husband, Tyler of Guymon; Christopher Livesay and wife, Michelle of St. Louis, Missouri; and Derek Livesay of Dodge City, Kansas; and seven great grandchildren, Braeden and Brett Fields, Haley and Reese Chapman, and Breckyn, Sydney and Brandt Livesay.  She is also survived by three sisters-in-law, Vera Spradlin, Grace Spradlin, and Olene Spradlin.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Josephine Chessmore, four brothers, Douglas, John, Kermit and Frank Spradlin and a newborn daughter, Vicky Ann Alexander.

Funeral services will be conducted today, March 26, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Grace Southern Baptist Church, 115 NW 10th Street, Guymon, with Rev. Tom Freeman, Pastor, officiating.   Graveside services will be Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Canute Cemetery, Canute, Oklahoma.  Services are under the care of Henson-Novak Funeral Directors of Guymon.

Memorials may be given to initiate a scholarship fund to help students and establish a tutoring program.  Friends may give memorials to the Margaret Alexander Scholarship Fund, c/o Henson-Novak Funeral Directors, P.O. Box 1306, Guymon, OK  73942.
