Rev. Howard D. Janssen, age 88 and resident of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, passed away on Monday, July 2, 2018 in Jane Phillips Medical Center.

Howard Dean Janssen was born on December 26, 1929 in Pekin, Illinois. He was the son of Julius Caesar Janssen and Nellie Ann (Reese) Janssen. He was raised and attended school in Illinois where he graduated high school. After high school, he attended Gordon College in Massachusetts. During this time, he married Shirley Ann Alley in 1952 in Hammond, Indiana. He continued his studies at Gordon Seminary in Hamilton, Massachusetts where he received his Master of Divinity. After completing his Seminary, he began his Pastoral Ministry in Illinois before moving to Bartlesville in 1970 where he and Shirley pastored and lived for approximately nine years. In 1979, they moved to Minnesota and continued their ministry; later moving to Wisconsin, where Howard retired. In 1994, the family moved back to Bartlesville where Howard began his prison ministry with Phil Lorenz, friend and longtime Bartlesville resident. Shirley preceded Howard in death in 1995 and he had continued his residence in Bartlesville since that time. Howard was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Bartlesville; Bartlesville Choral Society and the Presbyterian Church Choir. He loved to sing, enjoyed camping and taking home movies. He also enjoyed writing poetry. 

Survivors include his children, Sharon Janssen, of Gretna, Louisiana, Deborah Janssen, of Severn, Maryland, Daniel Janssen and his wife, Febe, of Hamilton, Massachusetts, and Paula DeJardin of Luxemburg, Wisconsin. 

Rev. Janssen was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley; son, David Janssen in 2004; son-in-law, Douglas Grove; brother, Edward Janssen; and sister, Nellie Ann Irwin.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the choir department, c/o The First Presbyterian Church, 505 SE Dewey, Bartlesville OK 74003, or to Kairos Prison Ministry of Oklahoma, PO Box 54383, Oklahoma City, OK 73154-1383.

Services for Rev. Janssen were held on Thursday, July 5, 2018, at 2:00 PM in the First Presbyterian Church, 505 S. Dewey Ave. Pastor Stephen Carl of First Presbyterian Church was the officiant.

Interment followed the service in White Rose Cemetery.
