Loretta West, 92, of
Bartlesville, died Thursday
in Bartlesville.
Loretta was born the
daughter of Tom and Bertha (Askins)
Whitbey on Jan. 18, 1924 in
Dublin, AR. She was raised
in Dublin, a small community
with a post office and a gas
station, long since gone
now. Loretta graduated from
Scranton High School and
worked at the small gas
station pumping gas. Once
WW Il broke out she moved to
Mississippi to live with her
sister Estelle and worked
for Western Union. Loretta
met James G. West while
still in school but when he
returned home for a visit
after officer training they
became a couple.
They were
united in marriage on March
30, 1944, before he deployed
for a rotation in Europe.
Once the war was over she
joined James and over his
30-year military career,
they moved as and when
ordered. After James’
honorable discharge in1972
they made their home in
Charleston, AR before moving
to Bartlesville in 1995 to
be closer to the children.
James preceded her in death
in 1996.
Loretta loved to garden and
could grow anything. Once a
greeting card arrived with a
mystery seed and it grew
into a beautiful pine tree.
She loved the birds that
would visit her home and
they were welcomed with
plenty to eat.
Loretta is survived by her
three children, Darlene Shaw
of Del City, Mel Collins of
Bartlesville, and Ron West
and Sheryl of Bartlesville;
one sister Ruthie Jean Roper
of Paris, AR; six
grandchildren and one great
grandchild.
She is preceded
in death by her husband,
parents, three brothers and
three sisters.
Graveside services will be
held 10 a.m. Thursday, Sept.
8, at the Memorial Park
Cemetery. Services are under
the direction of Carter
Davis and the Davis Family
Funeral Home. Online
condolences and remembrances
may be shared with Loretta’s
