Longtime Bartlesville, Oklahoma resident, Duane Elvin Marquis passed away at home in Bartlesville, on Tuesday, May 22, 2018.
He was born December 8, 1924, in Enid, Oklahoma to Clyde and Emma (Mawhorter) Marquis. He was educated in Enid schools. After high school, he attended collage at Oklahoma A&M University in Stillwater, Oklahoma and was in the ROTC. He was inducted into the U.S. Naval Service on June 22, 1944 as a Radio Technician, Second Class on the USS Tutuila and received the Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, and the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal and was honorably discharged on June 9, 1946. He continued his college education at Oklahoma A&M where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where he earned a Master in Science in Engineering. He worked for Bryon Jackson in Los Angeles, California and Tulsa, Oklahoma before joining Phillips 66. He married Bonnie Marquis on June 21, 1958, in Tulsa. They made their home in Bartlesville. Duane was an active member of several groups. He is a past President of the Wasono Shrine Club and participated in numerous Shrine events including the Shrine Carnival, Shrine Circus trips for kids, IHOP fund raising days, and felt privileged to participate in an Akdar Shrine Center Patient transportation program. He was a member of the Bartlesville Kiwanis Club where he often led signing, was recognized for 25 years of service, and was awarded the C.T. Bush Award from Kiwanis International. He attained the honor of being a Scottish Rite Mason for 25 years and was recognized by the Grand Lodge of Oklahoma Ancient, Free and Accepted Masons Guthrie, Oklahoma for fifty years of Masonic service. He was a member of the Bartlesville Amateur Radio Club and enjoyed teaching kids Morse Code at the Dewey Fair. For many years he and his family were active in the FUMC family campers. He was a member of the Choral Society and played guitar with his wife in the Silver Strings Group at community events. He worked as a set builder with the Little Theater, as well as taught minuet lessons with his wife at the OK Mozart festival for many years. As a young adult he played multiple musical instruments and played in multiple dance bands including the Jimmy Harris Orchestra, Earl Maples & Orchestra, and the Ken Miller Orchestra; and in retirement he was a member of the Rio Grande Valley Band and the Tip-O-Texas Dance Band in the McAllen, Texas area. In retirement he had the honor of going on an Oklahoma Honor Flight and attended a Tutuila ship reunion event.
Preceding Mr. Marquis in death are his parents, Clyde and Emma Marquis, and his wife Bonnie.
Survivors include daughters Cathy Hendrickson, and her husband Paul of Aurora, Colorado, Linda Jennings, and her husband Steve, of Charlotte, North Carolina; grandchildren Jacob Hendrickson, Emma Hendrickson, Marissa Jennings, and Claudia Jennings; sister Nedra Godsey; and many other relatives.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be given in Duane's memory made payable to the Animal Ministry at Bartlesville First Church, 4715 Price Road, PO Box 3636, Bartlesville, OK 74006 or the Shriners Hospital, addressed to the Arnold Moore & Neekamp Funeral Home, 710 S. Dewey Ave., Bartlesville, OK 74003.
A service for Duane will be held in early July at Bartlesville First Church. Entombment will occur at 9:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 29, 2018, at Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville. Arrangements were entrusted to the Arnold Moore & Neekamp Funeral Home.
