Dr. Thomas J. Hill, age 98, was born on October 26, 1927, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, and passed away on April 9, 2026, in Norman, Oklahoma. His parents were Thomas Reed Hill and Marvel Margurite (Woods) Hill.

Dr. Hill proudly served his country as a Lieutenant Air Intelligence Officer in the United States Navy. During his service, he was stationed aboard the USS Philippine Sea, which embarked from San Francisco on December 15, 1952, in support of operations during the Korean War. His time in the Navy reflected his dedication, discipline, and commitment to serving others.
Following his military service, Dr. Hill devoted his life to education as a professor at the University of Oklahoma. He was known as a pioneer in the classroom, becoming one of the first professors to embrace teaching large lecture courses of more than 200 students at a time. Despite the size of his classes, he demonstrated a remarkable personal touch by requiring students to sit in alphabetical order and committing himself to memorizing every student's name by the end of the first week each semester. His ability to connect with students on an individual level, even in large settings, left a lasting impression on generations of learners.
Dr. Hill was widely respected as a problem solver and an innovator in education. His excellence in teaching was recognized with a prestigious Gold Medal for Excellence in Teaching. In a testament to his extraordinary career, he once received a letter from the president of the University of Oklahoma expressing that there were no remaining awards to bestow upon him, as he had already earned them all. This rare acknowledgment reflected the profound impact he had on the university and its students.
Dr. Hill's legacy is one of service, intellect, and unwavering dedication to both his country and his students. He will be remembered for his sharp mind, his commitment to excellence, and the countless lives he influenced throughout his career.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at Bartlesville Memorial Park Cemetery.
