Vern D. Cunningham, 84, of Dewey, left this earth for his eternal home on Wednesday June 14, 2017.

Vern was born the son of George Oliver and Elsie Lenore (McVey) Cunningham on June 12, 1933 in Bartlesville. He lived all of his life in the area except for the two years he lived in Venice, CA, while attending high school. He loved sports and was proud of his time spent in gymnastics while in school. Vern graduated from College High with the Class of 1952. He married his high school sweetheart Norma Ellen Lippert on February. 16, 1952, and they enjoyed 65 loving years of marriage. During the Korean Conflict, Vern served in the US army from 1953-1955 in Dearborn, Michigan, in the radar unit. Upon his honorable discharge, Vern returned home and started Cunningham Construction. He built and remodeled homes and churches throughout the Bartlesville area. After retiring as a contractor, he worked at his son’s business, Cunningham Graphics, Inc. up to the time of his passing. Outside of working Vern loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Vern was active in the Baptist church and was a deacon for many years. He served in various ministries including the nursery, youth and van ministry. He was a current member of the First Baptist Church of Dewey. Vern had a serving heart, and was always willing to help anyone. He had passion for gardening, metal detecting, camping and watching movies. He had a great since of humor, always singing and playing practical jokes with his family and friends.

Vern is survived by his wife, Norma, of the home; two children, daughter, Jan Sewell and Tom of Sand Springs, and son, Vince Cunningham and Karla of Bartlesville, grandchildren Evan Sewell and Erin of Tulsa, Wade Sewell and Kasey of Jenks, Dana Lichtenwalter and David of Tulsa and Brent Cunningham of Bartlesville. Great grandchildren; Emery, Emerson, sisters Lucille McCabe and Darla Raley, and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Maxine Hobson, Gerald Cunningham and Dorothy Hunter and one great grandchild Beckett Sewell.

Visitation will be held Saturday 12-5, Sunday 12-5 and Monday 9-12.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Dewey First Baptist Church, Youth Ministry, PO Box 66, Dewey, OK 74029. Vern’s family will receive friends at the Davis Family Funeral Home, 918-534-3030, 113 S. Osage (Hwy. 75), Dewey, on Sunday, June 18, from 3-5 p.m.

Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Monday, June 19, at the Dewey First Baptist Church, with Pastor Mark Wright officiating.

Interment will follow in the Memorial Park Cemetery with full military honors provided by the James H. Teel American Legion Post 105 Honor Guard. Services are under the direction of Carter Davis and the Davis Family Funeral Home.
