DERBY – Burgess, Betty J. (McConnell), 70, passed away Tuesday, December 22, 2015. She was born February 27, 1945 to Donald and Josie (Anderson) McConnell in Bartlesville, OK.

In 1962, Betty was a delegate to the 50th Anniversary International Girl Scouts Roundup in Button Bay, VT. She graduated from College High School in Bartlesville with Gold Key Honors. Betty attended Oklahoma State University for 3 years before moving to Wichita in 1967. She graduated Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelors Degree in Education from Wichita State University in 1968. In 1979, Betty earned her Masters of Science Education. She taught science at Mulvane Jr. High School for 18 years. Betty was a great caretaker for her family and loved to quilt.

She is survived by her husband of 51 years, LeRoy Burgess; son, Richard E. Burgess; sister, Nancy McConnell; and nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Monday from 1 to 8 pm with family present between 5 and 7 pm. Funeral: 10 am, Tuesday, December 29, 2015; both at Smith Family Mortuary, 1415 N. Rock Rd., Derby, KS 67037.

Interment to follow at Memorial Park Cemetery in Bartlesville, OK at 2:30 pm.
