The world lost a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, Peggy Cunningham, 90, on Wednesday, January 12, 2022. Peggy passed away at home, surrounded by loved ones.

She was born to the late Clyde and Elva Whittenburg on February 13, 1931 in Bartlesville, OK. Peggy graduated from Dewey High School in 1949 and married her high school sweetheart, the late Lester Cunningham, on April 9th, 1950. Lester and Peggy then relocated to Monterey, California for Lester's Army enlistment. Peggy worked for Del Monte and spent her spare time on the beach with her best friend, Priscilla. After moving back to Oklahoma and then relocating to Missouri for work, they landed in Huntsville, AL, where they raised their children and found their forever home in Athens, AL. After the passing of her husband, Lester, Peggy split her time between her home in Athens, AL. and her home in Bartlesville, OK.

Peggy was an amazing cook who could whip up a delicious dish no matter what ingredients she had on hand. Her family cherishes the memories of mornings around her kitchen table enjoying toast with homemade chocolate pudding. Peggy had a freshly brewed cup of coffee and pastry ready to go for every visitor, no matter the time of day. She was also an avid thrift shopper and was always on the hunt for a great deal. She loved blessing those around her with her finds. Peggy was passionate about serving the church and attended Fairview Baptist Church in Athens, AL. with her husband Lester and her family church, Dewey United Methodist Indian Church. When Peggy wasn't serving others, she enjoyed playing dominos and cards, taking trips with friends, and visiting her family in Oklahoma.

Although Peggy was a homemaker for a large majority of her life, she worked for Huntsville Hospital in Administration for several years until her retirement in 1993. When Peggy wasn't working, she was purchasing investment homes, fixing them up, and renting them out. She was an independent, strong woman who did not have a lazy bone in her body. But, out of all of her accomplishments, her greatest joy was her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughter, Tammy Latham of Bartlesville, OK, her son, Eric Cunningham and his partner, Vickie Smith of Athens, AL., her earthly daughter, Shelly Dickerson and her husband Ron Dickerson of Athens, AL., her grandchildren, Alex Cunningham, Casie Icks and husband Ryan Icks, Charlie Porter and husband Colton Porter, Chelsie Wagoner and husband Marshall Wagoner, Jake Dickerson, Luke Dickerson, her great grandchildren, Chloe, A.J., Ellie, Gray, Lad, Evie, Maleigha, Sadie, Georgia, nieces, nephews and countless friends. All of whom she loved and touched deeply.

There aren't enough words to summarize what an amazing mother, grandmother, wife, and friend she was. The world is less bright without her.

Graveside service will be held at the Dewey Cemetery on Friday, January, 14th at 4:00 PM.
