Helen Louise Hess Bobbitt, 89, died on Wed., Jan. 17, 2018.

Helen was born in Bartlesville, OK, on Dec. 30, 1928, to Alice and Mark Hess. She graduated from College High School in Bartlesville in 1946. She received her BS degree in Chemistry in 1950. While studying at Oklahoma A&M (Okla. State Univ.) she met another Chemistry student Charlie Bobbitt, who turned out to be the love of her life. They were married July 18, 1948, at First Methodist Church in Bartlesville. After a short teaching stint in Healdton, Helen and Charlie moved back to the Bartlesville area and settled in Dewey.

Although Charlie did not like to travel, Helen did. She would pack up the car with her mother, sister and two kids and drive all over the country. And, unlike Charlie, she would stop any time the kids saw something interesting. Trips included the 1968 HemisFair in San Antonio, the beach in Corpus Christi, Mammoth Cave National Park, My Old Kentucky Home, New York, and Niagara Falls. She also enjoyed skiing lessons in Colorado and the beach in Jamaica.

Helen was an active member of her church and volunteered extensively for Voice of the Martyrs. Helen loved people. She was full of life and drew her energy from being around others. Playing volleyball was one of her greatest pleasures. She led her daughter’s Girl Scout troop, taught Vacation Bible School, and with Charlie, hosted a young adults bible study in their home.

Helen was one of the kindest people to walk this earth. Driven by a genuine love for others she always put the concerns of others ahead of her own. She fought for the underdog and could be fierce in defending those being bullied or mistreated. She wanted every game to end in a tie so there would be no losers. She was an inspiration to many.

She was a resident at Heritage Villa for the past year and a half. Even there her loving personality and gentle spirit were known by all the staff. Though dementia stole her memory and robbed her of mental clarity, Helen still told everyone there how pretty they looked every day. She had a smile for everyone.

Helen was preceded in death by her husband Charlie, two brothers and two sisters.

She is survived by her two children, Mark Bobbitt of Bartlesville and Maggie Bobbitt of Chicago.

Visitation will be held Sun., Jan. 21, from 12-5. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial contributions in her memory be made to Dewey United Methodist Church (designated for local missions) - 618 N. Delaware, Dewey OK 74029; or to the Alzheimer’s Association (Alz.org).

Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 22, at Dewey United Methodist Church. Services are under the direction of Carter Davis and the Davis Family Funeral Home. Helen Louise Hess Bobbitt, 89, died on Wed., Jan. 17, 2018.
