Carwin “Ed” Edward Henderson, 88, of Fort Gibson passed away Sunday, October 28, 2018 in Stillwater.

Ed was born May 31, 1930 on a farm three miles south of Bixby, to Carwin Leroy and Ruby (Ethridge) Henderson. Ed graduated from Bixby High School in 1948. He attended and graduated from Oklahoma A&M College in 1952 with a Bachelors Degree in animal science and an ROTC Commission as a 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served 2 years active duty and 18 years active reserve and retired as a Major in the U.S. Army in 1975.

He met Roberta Fay Knowles in 1955 at Oklahoma State University and later married the love of his life for 60 years on January 28, 1956. They were married at Arnett Christian Church in Arnett. Roberta passed away February 10, 2016 at Saint Francis Hospital in Tulsa. Ed served as a Vocational Agriculture Instructor at Schuyler High School in Schuyler, Neb. from 1955 to 1965 and an Instructor at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln, Neb. from 1965 to 1970 as a Rural Development Specialist. He joined Oklahoma State University in July 1970 as an area Rural Development Specialist serving the Northeast Oklahoma 21 counties Cooperation Extension Service Agriculture Economic Department College of Agriculture. Ed worked with communities setting up 1) Rural Water District, 2) Rural Fair Departments, 3) County wide EMS District, 4) Solid Waste Management Districts, 5) County Planning Organization. Ed was active after retirement in 1993 in the Muskogee Regional Livestock Show, Northeast Solid Waste Authority, Cross Timbers RC&D and various church affairs in the Fort Gibson United Methodist Church. Ed and Roberta enjoyed traveling, going on cruises to Hawaii, Alaska, the Caribbean, Bermuda and spending a week each summer on Tenkiller Lake Sixshooter area, boating, skiing, swimming and visiting with family. He was the Chaplain for Muskogee Corps of Gideons International from 2010-2015, Chaplain for senior citizens and member of the American Legion Post 20 of Fort Gibson. Ed loved going to OSU football, basketball and baseball games and held season tickets for 20 years for football games.

Ed is survived by his sons; Larry Henderson of Bixby, Jerry Henderson and wife Susan of Ardmore, Terry Henderson and wife Beth of Atlanta, Ind.; daughter, Rhonda Johnson and husband Jeff of Fairmount, Ind.; grandchildren, Amy, Kayla and husband Josh, Rebekah, Oliver, Amelia, Schuyler, Jeremy, Jacob and Jonah; and great-grandchild, Jack. He is also survived by many relatives, cousins and friends in the Bixby, Stillwater and Fort Gibson area.

Ed loved working with people and working with livestock and all those in 4H and FFA. He will be missed by all.

A family visitation will be held Thursday, November 1, 2018 with family receiving friends from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. at Clifford D. Garrett Family Funeral Home.

A celebration of Ed’s life will be 10 a.m. Friday, November 2, 2018 at the Fort Gibson First United Methodist Church with Reverend Dawn Richards officiating.

Committal prayers and interment will be 2 p.m. in Bixby Cemetery with Reverend Ray Crawford officiating. Casket bearers are Oliver Henderson, Jeremy Johnson, Jacob Johnson, Jonah Johnson, Scott Henderson, Bob Henderson, Glen Blackman and Kent Griffith. Honorary casket bearers are Chester Hendrix, John Moffitt, Terry Schrick and Butch Cook.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations in Ed’s name to the Fort Gibson First United Methodist Church 302 Beauregard St Fort Gibson, OK 74434 or the Gideons International PO Box 204 Muskogee, OK 74402, or Oklahoma State University.

The family of Carwin “Ed” Edward Henderson has entrusted his service and burial to Clifford D. Garrett Family Funeral Home, Fort Gibson. 918-478- 2555.
