James H. McMurtry

ENID, Okla. - James H. McMurtry, 76, of Velma, Okla., passed away Saturday, July 6, 2013, at Meridian Nursing Home.

Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, 2013, at Velma United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Kevin McKinley officiating.

Interment will follow in New Velma Cemetery , under the direction of Don Grantham Funeral Home, Duncan, Okla.

All visitation will be at Grantham Velma Chapel. The family will receive friends from 5:30-7:30 p.m. today at the chapel.

James was born April 17, 1937, in Harrisburg Community, Okla., the son of Jim McMurtry and Nelia Thomas McMurtry.

He attended school at Harrisburg and Velma Alma, graduating in 1955. He then attended Oklahoma A&M College in Stillwater, graduating in 1961.

He married Marylyn Van Dyke June 2, 1956, in Velma, Okla.

He loved to hunt, fish and attend sporting events. James and Marylyn won the Doc Ely Velma Alma Fan of the Year Award in 2009.

James is survived by Marylyn, his wife of 57 years; his son, Jimmy McMurtry of Carthage, Texas; two daughters, Karen Hatler of Katy, Texas, and Sharon Twomey and husband S.D. of Carthage, Texas; grandchildren, Lauren Hickey and husband Will of Dallas, Texas, Jordan Hatler of Waco, Texas, Ryan Easter of Montgomery, Texas, Megan Easter of Carthage, Texas, and Jared Twomey of Carthage, Texas; and two great-grandchildren, Christian and Micaela Nealy. He also is survived by two sisters, Sylvia England of Duncan and Anna Speed and husband Arthur of Tulsa, Okla.

He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews and many friends.

Memorial contributions may be made to Velma Alma High School Athletic Scholarship Fund at Velma High School.
