Joan Maupin
Joan Ward was born in Claremore, Oklahoma on October 19, 1931; she was the only child of Joe and Edgalee Dunaway Ward. She grew up in the Whitehill area on an oil lease and attended Whitehill School through the 8th grade, then transferred to Chelsea High School graduating in 1949. She and Bob Maupin were married on January 12, 1949 in Chelsea, Oklahoma. They had two children, Mark and Jan.
Joan was highly involved in the Chelsea community. She was an active member and volunteer at the Memorial Methodist Church for many years. She served and Chaired on many committees, helped with church meals and it wasn't below her to get in there and give the church kitchen a good cleaning. When her daughter Jan was growing up, she was actively involved with the Girl Scouts. She was an organizer of the local food bank. In 1988 Joan received the Chelsea Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award. Joan worked with Bob in the family business, Maupin's Department Store for many years. She loved working in the store which allowed her to keep in touch with people in the community. Joan was an extremely proficient buyer for the store. She knew her customers and knew what they liked. Many people were fortunate to have Joan pick out gifts for them, having them wrapped and ready to go when they came in the store. She knew birthdays and anniversaries by heart. Children as well as adults, loved to stop and visit with Joan and Bob. Many enjoyable visits were had without a purchase being made. Joan and Bob always made time for friends. Joan had a wonderful personality and loved people. She had a special love for the elderly and spent a lot of time visiting and helping those who needed her. Joan loved being a grandmother and doted on her two grandsons.
She went to be with the Lord on Saturday morning, January 6th at her home.
She is survived by: Her Husband, Bob Maupin of Chelsea, Oklahoma. One Son, Mark Maupin and wife Sharon of Suwanee, Georgia. One Daughter, Jan and husband Rex Largent of Sugar Land, Texas.
