Mary Elizabeth McColgin Burns

Mary Elizabeth McColgin Burns was born March 8, 1912 in Rankin, Oklahoma to Amelia Elizabeth and Grant McColgin.

She passed away August 22, 2001 at her home near Reydon, Oklahoma at the age of 89 years, 5 months and 14 days.

She grew up in the Rankin community, south of present day Reydon.

Mary graduated from Rankin High School in 1928 and later enrolled at Oklahoma City University.

She returned to Roger Mills County where she trained as a nurse with Dr. Cary.

She was married to Leonard Burns at her parent's home in Rankin, Oklahoma on December 17, 1930. Leonard and Mary made their home in the Reydon/Rankin community all of their married life except for a few years when they farmed near Clinton, Oklahoma and also lived a short time in Colorado.

Mary exhibited a genuine interest in the people of the community and had a deep love for her family.

She joined the Reydon United Methodist Church at the age of 11. She continued to be very active in the church, where she served in numerous positions.

She was also a member of the UMW.

At the time of her death she was serving on the finance committee and on the pastor-parish relations committee. She was also an active member of the Reydon Unit of the United Methodist Women. Throughout her entire life, Mary placed strong emphasis on her faith, her family and her friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Donald Wayne and James Dan Burns;two sisters and four brothers.

The family requests memorial donations be made to the Reydon United Methodist Church or the charity of your choice.

Services were held August 25, 2001 at 10:30 a.m. at Reydon Community Building, officiated by Rev. Lynn Brack. Burial was held at White Rose Cemetery, Reydon, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service.

Survivors include her husband of 70 years, Leonard Burns of Reydon, Oklahoma; one daughtger and son-in-law, Kay and Tom Lovett of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; one son and daughter-in-law, Eugene and Elenita of Agency, Missouri; two daughters-in-law, Roberta Burns of Guthrie, Oklahoma and Martha Burns of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Lisa, Bryan, Greg, Todd and Kerri; six great grandchildren, Bryson, Genifer, Collin, Blaine, Anna and Cali; one sister, Octavia DeBerry of Tempe, Arizona; one brother, Franklin McColgin and wife, Betty Lou of Bridgewater, Connecticut; many nieces and nephews; and a host of other relatives and friends.
