Emma L. Brazell Johnson

Emma L. Brazell Johnson was born in Tolar, Hood County, Texas, November 25, 1877 and passed away May 9, 1946 in the Community Hospital at Elk City, Oklahoma.

She became a member of the Baptist church at the age of 12 years and lived a faithful Christian life to the end.

She moved from Hood County, Texas to Roger Mills County, Oklahoma in the early 90's.

Her parents homestead was in Sun Flower Flat community, near what is now known as the Herring community.

She was married to J. P. Johnson November 27, 1899. To this union four children were born, Herman and J. P. Johnson, Jr., both of Elk City; Mrs. Elsie K. Little of Lawton; and Iris Marie Johnson, who preceded her in death, October 16, 1919. Her husband also preceded her in death November 7, 1936.

She also leaves one sister, Mrs. Jessie Hensley of Strong City; four brothers, Jim Brazell of Moriarty, New Mexico; John Brazell of Wichita, Kansas; E. J. Brazell of Mundy, Texas; and R. M. Brazell of Natalia, Texas; four grandchildren, Nola Marguerite and Elsie Virginia Johnson; Jimmy and Lanny Little; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and a host of friends.

Mr. and Mrs. Johnson's first home was on Old Sour Dough Johnson Ranch, four miles north of Cheyenne. They later moved to Cheyenne where they resided for a number of years, where Mr. Johnson worked in the Cheyenne State Bank and also at the County Court House.

Poor health forced Mr. Johnson to a more out-of-doors life, so for several years they lived on their farm near Roll, Oklahoma. Later they bought a general mercantile store in Roll, which they later moved to Strong City, Oklahoma.

Here all their children were reared and attended school.

In 1940 Mrs. Johnson moved to Elk City where she resided until her death.

Mrs. Johnson was active in church, home and community affairs to the hour of her fatal attack of cerebral hemorrhage. She was helping with funeral arrangements of a friend when she became so ill she had to go home. She remained conscious only long enough to reach her daughter-in-law, Mrs. J. P. Johnson Jr., by telephone. The duration of her illness was only 10 hours.

She passed quietly and peacefully into the Great Beyond at 12:50 a.m. Thuursday, May 9, 1946.

Services were held in the First Baptist Church at Elk City with Rev. Horace L. James, pastor, officiating. Another service was held at the Strong City cemetery at 5:00 p.m.

She was laid to rest between her husband and younger daughter in the Strong City cemetery, Strong City, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma.
