DIES AFTER FIGHT WITH MAD BULL
Hiram Baxley of Sweetwater Dead - - Wife Attempts Rescue

Hiram Baxley of Sweetwater, the southwest corner of this county, was attacked by a vicious bull last Friday afternoon and received fatal injuries. He died at at a.m, Saturday, March 3, 1917.
Mr. Baxley was strolling about his pasture, being in feeble condition from the effects of an operation recently performed at the Francis hospital in Elk City. The bull, although dehorned, was known to be vicious, attacked him suddenly, butting him down and trampling him in a terrible manner. His body was mangled and bruised fearfully, and his chest crushed, ribs broken, and his face cut and bruised by the animal's feet.
Dr. Cary of Rankin was called and arrived in a short time, and after a hurried examination the doctor pronounced the injuries serious, and Dr. Wendal of Sayre was called to assist in administering to the suffering man.
Mr. Baxley retained consciousness to the last and was able to tell the particulars. It is not known how long the animal had him down when his wife discovered him. She went to the rescue promptly with pitchfork and shotgun. Two shots from the gun failed to drive the vicious animal away, but she succeeded in driving him away with the pitchfork.
Mr. Baxley was buried in the Mulberry Cemetery, Sweetwater, Roger Mills County, Oklahoma on Sunday. The Masonic lodge conducted the funeral rites.
The Sentinel extends sympathy to the bereaved family, and we feel that we have lost a valuable friend.
