Hershel Harrison Bates, Sr.

Hershel Harrison Bates, Sr. was born March 6, 1936 in Hugo, Oklahoma to Henry Harrison and Bulah Marie (Chadrick) Bates. He passed from this life April 19, 2013 in Antlers, Oklahoma, at the age of 77. 

Hershel had lived in the Antlers area for the past 58 years. He was married to Velvie Cole until her death in 1986. Hershel and Vetis Wren were married on February 7, 1987 in Antlers. Hershel was a logger and carpenter, passing on the trade to his son. He was of the Full-Gospel faith and was a minister for over 40 years. He enjoyed talking about the Bible, and went to the Antlers County Jail for 16 years talking to the inmates about what he loved to talk about, "The Bible". He enjoyed working in the log woods, raising honey bees, making furniture and spending time with his family and friends. 

Hershel was preceded in death by his wife: Velvie Nora (Cole) Bates; father: Henry Bates; mother: Bulah (Chadrick) Bates; brother: J.C. Bates; 4 sisters: Laura Mae Humphrey, Ruth Bates, Lucilla Bates, & Ruby Fay Sangiolo. 

He is survived by his wife: Vetis of the home; children: Hershel Bates, Jr. & wife Elaine of Antlers, Aliene Wyrick of Antlers, Lois Sharp & husband Tony of Antlers, Fonda Wall & husband Carl of Antlers, Mildred Wright and husband Mickel of Antlers; 10 grandsons: Jamie Wyrick, Roy Bates, Cecil Bates, Christopher Bates, Jaden Bates, Junior Bates, RC Bates, Larry Wall, Joshua Wright; 7 granddaughters: Angie Heady, Christy Bloodworth, Jennifer Wyrick-Tucker-Rogers, Sarah Wyrick, Christina Chastain, Heather Wright, Beth Bates; 12 Great-grandchildren: Brittani Heady, Dakota Heady, Tabitha Harker, Megan Bloodworth, Matthew Bloodworth, Brandy Bloodworth, Nathan Bates, Katie Bates, Savannah Tucker, Zoe Tucker, Payton Tucker-Booth, Brazet Tucker-Booth, as well as many other relatives and friends.
