RICHARD K. "DICK" RACE

9 Sep 1932 - 22 Sep 2012

Richard K. (Dick) Race, 80, of Norman passed away September 22, 2012 at St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City. He was born on September 9, 1932 in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Melvin and Helen Knowles Race. Memorial services will begin at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, September 27, 2012 at the McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church, 419 S. University Blvd. in Norman with Reverend Linda Harker officiating. Graveside services will begin at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, September 27, 2012 at the Tecumseh Cemetery, 18800 Gordon Cooper Dr., Tecumseh, OK with Dr. Dick House officiating.

Mr. Race graduated from Shawnee High School in 1950 and from Oklahoma A&M in 1954. After graduating college, Mr. Race joined the United States Air Force and retired in 1958 from the USAF Reserves as a Captain. He then graduated from the University of Oklahoma College of Law in 1962. After his law school graduation, he became employed as an attorney with the Oklahoma Insurance Department where he retired as an Assistant Insurance Commissioner in 1990.

Mr. Race joined Sigma Chi Fraternity while at Oklahoma A & M and remained a life-long member. Mr. Race was a Mason, a member of the Composite Shawnee Lodge No. 107, A.F. & A.M., Thirty-second Degree of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Freemasonry of the Southern Jurisdiction of the United State of America, McAlester Consistory, and a member the Elks Lodge in Shawnee.

Mr. Race joined St Paul’s United Methodist Church in Shawnee in 1940 and remained a member until his death. After moving to Norman in 2004 to be closer to his children and grandchildren, Mr. Race attended McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church. A life-long Methodist, Mr. Race lived a life of faith proclaiming as written in John 3:16, ”For God so loved the world, that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him, should not perish but have eternal life.”

Mr. Race was preceded in death by his parents, his paternal grandparents, C.W. and Sadie Race, and maternal grandparents, Dr. Berry and Grace Knowles, and his brothers, Bob Race and Jack L. Race, M.D.

Mr. Race is survived by his wife, Sue, of the home and their three daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Bill McConnell, Lynne and Mark McGuire and Leslie and Tyler LaReau, all of Norman; and grandchildren, Lindsay McConnell Hawkins and husband Capt. Jon Hawkins, Clay McConnell, Morgan McGuire, Meredith McGuire, Maggie Sue McGuire, Emma LaReau and Claire LaReau, and great grandchildren Jackson and Madi Hawkins.
