Billy Joe "Bill" Newsom

Billy Joe “Bill” Newsom, 87, of Shawnee, Oklahoma passed from this life Tuesday, January 25, 2022 at his home.

He was born April 6, 1934 to William Thurman and Stella Mae (Tabb) Newsom in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Bill was raised in Shawnee on the family farm. He attended Shawnee Public Schools and graduated with the class of 1953 from Shawnee High School.

Bill owned and operated Bill’s Garage on Gordon Cooper Drive for many years.

He married Margaret Haug on May 3, 1953 at the First Christian Church in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

Bill loved fast cars, enjoyed riding motorcycles, doing crafts especially, making walking sticks, hats and gardening.

He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Stella Newsom; 2 sons-in-law, Steve Kennedy and Mark French; and step great-grandson, Jakob Ungerecht.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 68 ½ years, Margaret Newsom of the home; 3 daughters and 1 son-in-law, Cathy Kennedy of Shawnee, OK, Connie Newsom of Tecumseh, OK and Tina and Ronnie Sims of Shawnee, OK; 1 son, Ricky Newsom of Shawnee, OK; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and other extended family and friends.

Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Sunday, January 30, 2022 at Cooper Funeral Home and continue through service time. Service will be 10:00 a.m., Monday, January 31, 2022 at Cooper Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Clint Dawkins, Sharon Baptist Church officiating. Burial will follow at Tecumseh Cemetery under the direction of Cooper Funeral Home of Tecumseh.
