REV. JAMES MURPHY, O.S.B.
1920 - 2001


The Rev. James Murphy, O.S.B., 80, Shawnee, died Tuesday in an Oklahoma City nursing home.
He was born Daniel Augustine Murphy November 29, 1920, the son of Austin J. and Catherine Menz Murphy in El Reno. He grew up in Oklahoma City and attended St. Gregory's High School and St. Gregory's College.
He entered the novitiate of St. Gregory's Abbey in 1940 and made his monastic profession on June 11, 1941. In 1944, he made his solemn monastic profession. He received his bachelor's degree in philosophy from St. John's University in Collegeville, Minnesota, in 1943. He pursued theological studies for the priesthood at St. Gregory's. Father James was ordained to the priesthood in the Cathedral of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Oklahoma City on December 21, 1946. He presided at his First Solemn Mass at the Cathedral on December 29, 1946.
He pursued graduate studies in business at the University of Oklahoma, taught business at St. Gregory's from 1946 to 1949, was treasurer of St. Gregory's College and business manager of St. Gregory's Abbey from 1962 to 1964.
Father James served at St. Benedict's Parish, Montebello, California, as assistant pastor from 1949 to 1954 and as pastor from 1966 to 1971. He also served at St. Benedict's Parish, Shawnee, from 1958 to 1962; and from 1971 to 1976; St. Patrick's Parish, Anadarko, from 1964 to 1966; Blessed Sacrament Parish, Coalgate, from 1976 to 1985; and St. Teresa's Parish, Harrah, from 1954 to 1958; and from 1985 to 2000.
In the summer of 2000, failing health forced him to retire to St. Ann's Home in Oklahoma City.
Survivors include his sister, Patricia Schleifer of Los Angeles, California; five nephews, one niece, a number of cousins and his family at St. Gregory's Abbey.
Vigil services will be 7:00 p.m. Thursday in the Abbey Chapel.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 4 p.m. Friday in the Abbey Church with Abbot Martin Lugo, O.S.B., as the principal celebrant.
Burial will follow in St. Gregory's Abbey Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Gregory's Abbey, Shawnee, in Father James ' honor to fund scholarships for training young monks in theology.
